I put my cat to sleep today, thanks everyone for the advice given
a few days ago, I took him to Alameda East Vet clinic this morning and after the blood work was done it was determined that even with aggressive treatment he might not make it so I decided to let him go. He was old and had a good life....and I cried like a baby...Losing a pet hurts more than you'd think it would...thank god for caring veterinarians.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

4. Sorry to hear that
I know how much it hurts to lose a pet. So often, we consider them to be part of the family and usually much more fun to be around than most people we know.

7. Oh, I'm sorry Demonaut.
Pets are part of the family, they stand by you through thick and thin and just love you. But if he'd had a good life, was ill, and might have suffered from treatment that wasn't even likely to work, you did the kind thing. Often people hang on so long not because their pet wants/needs it, but because the human can't say goodbye yet.

14. Sorry you lost your buddy
Losing a pet is a hard event to endure because these are the only creatures who unconditionally love you regardless. I am glad your buddy got humane care until the end.

16. I'm sorry you had to make that decision. I remember your post
and I told you I had an old sick cat also. Well, she's been on medication for over a year and Saturday night we had a pouring rain. When she didn't come in from the rain, I had a gut feeling and, sure enough, when I went out Sunday morning to look for her, she had apparently curled up and died. The sweet thing didn't make me have to make that decision and I thank her for that. Because of the downpour she was an awful mess, but I wrapped her up and buried her in the flowerbed where she liked to sleep. It hurts to lose a pet, but they had good lives - mine was 17. My thoughts are with you.

18. This so reminds me of my Tybalt, "King of Cats"
He was a lion among cats, lived a long, healthy, extremely kind and friendly life and at the age of 16 came down with feline leukemia. He is buried in my backyard with a slab of marble marking his grave, in which I have carved, "Here lies Tybalt, King of Cats".

23. That's cool. I went to OSH and bought the biggest "feather"
rock I could find and put it on top of where my Teddy is buried. I had one of those little cats that hides your house key and put that on top of the rock. Somehow all of that made me feel a little better.

22. I am so sorry--my condolences. But you did the best thing, it would have
taken too much out of an oldster to make it--sometimes the treatment is worse than the disease.

It'll be tough, but you'll get through it!

24. I feel your pain...
Have had to put pets to sleep, several through the years. I cried so hard every time that my body hurt for days. My husband always has to dig their graves in the back yard and he cries like a baby, too. I know the depth of your hurt and I am sorry. It's a very hard time. Don't feel silly that you feel bad and don't let anyone else tell you that you shouldn't be so sad.

me. But when during the examination the Vet spoke he would'nt react to her voice but when I spoke he would stir his head, that hurt

29. Love can make you feel things
so deeply - it's like you can feel how deeply in your physical body that the pain and anguish comes from. It's kind of an awesome experience. Like you, I didn't know that depth of love and loss was in me.

30. So very sorry
We lost two last summer, just a few weeks apart. One we had for 12 years and the other 17. My daughter did not know life without Scamp, the 17 yr old.

Still miss the old grumpus! We raised her from a tiny baby cat.

31. I had to do that many years ago, and it still hurts
I know how you feel; and I feel for you.

It hurts like hell.

Mine was in labored breathing and wasn't going to make it, and I made the decision to go ahead and have him put down.

I grieved so hard for a long time for my little friend.

I know you're hurting.

Many prayers for you.

My favorite cat died in July and I actually miss him today. He would always sit patiently by his little food bowl awaiting his ration of turkey.

Funny little creatures.
