I hate Real Madrid (soccer team)
Just read it in the O Globo newspaper web page. Bayern Leverkusen, from Germany, was playing against them in Madrid. Whenever two specific Bayern defenders touched the ball, a group of RM fans started to imitate monkeys. Yep, you guessed it. They're black. And Brazilian, by the way.

I want to hit these fuckers on the head with a blunt object.

2. I assume you must be aware of the story
Yes, I need help. For one thing, plane tickets are fucking expensive. ;)

Can I be counted as a honorary Bayern Leverkusen fan?

3. certainly

If it weren't for the "Bayer", I'd almost say that Leverkusen is as cool a team as they get - they have never won anything, yet they play a good team-based football.

I see some irony in racist abuse aimed against a German team, but attacks on Juan and Rocke shouldn't be discounted for the sake of irony.

Madird claims that the event was staged by the British press - sounds a little Rouchie too me...

7. A Pharma Megacorp with a difficult history.
Edited on Thu Nov-25-04 05:56 PM by Kellanved
Former part of IGFarben, the Nazi chemicals giant.

Ignoring the history (it is not like there are many major German companies with an easy history), the company still does not exactly behave like a "good" guy. Especially tricking during the approval process for drugs and pesticides seems to be a sport for some Bayer managers.

Well, they invented Asperine, gotta give 'em that.

8. And heroin, too!
And they came up with the name because of the way it makes you feel..."heroisch".

13. uhhmmm ... no.
I can't think of a single old German company that didn't do ugly things. Free labor and no union seems to be all the managers did care about. And the managers and owners who did care, were swiftly replaced.

15. Siemens is really old
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 09:15 AM by Kellanved
It was one of the major Electrical company in Imperial Germany and has quite an impressive history; albeit one that includes 12 very dark years.

Let's see:
SAP (but those guys are extremely RW.)
Aldi
Metro
Adidas
Puma
Hugo Boss

Some companies are very open about their past, others deny any responsibility. Sadly, it especially companies with American owners, which refuse to support funds created to help former slave workers.

Edit:
Did you see the Euro Exchange rate? We had €1 = $1.3329 early today.

His brother Rudolf founded Puma...

A pretty usual way to name a company (HaRiBo and so on).

4. I have hated Real Madrid...
ever since I learned that Real Madrid and its fans were huge supporters of the fascist Franco during his reign of terror.

So this kind of 'freeper' behaviour is nothing new.

Barcelona was the team of the opposition.

12. I wouldn't praise Athletico if I were you...
...their President, Jesus Gil, referred to black players on the Ajax squad as "cannibals" during the 90s when Athletico and Ajax were paired in a home-and-away tie in the Champions League.

Stick with Barcelona, a great team from the city that was the hub of opposition to Franco.

10. And Barcelona just recently beat Real 3-0...
...and are atop La Liga by seven points, or so. Barca were on a tear at the end of last season, and it looks like they are leaving the recent "wilderness" seasons behind them and entering a new period of dominance.

Real, on the other hand, seem to be in decline.

11. Spain and England recently played an international friendly...
...and the Spanish fans hurled racist taunts at English players who are black like Ashley Cole.

Commentary about Real's decline and the Spanish racism incident during the England friendly are here: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/feature?id=317228&cc=5901

20. England fans aren't much better...
The abuse WAS bad, and Spain deserve a heavy sanction for it, but we still have racism in the English game and the press here likes to forget that. It was also English fans who started the monkey chanting in the 1970s. England fans sing things like "I'd rather be a Paki than a Turk", given the history between the two nations recently. I love soccer and am English but refuse to support England at soccer.

As a Man Utd fan I loved them for signing him and taking that prima donna Beckham off our hands. My pet hate is Glasgow Rangers. They make Madrid fans look tame.

Same stadium, same reaction whenever a black player touched the ball. :grr: We've been discussing it down in the UK forum. The Spanish FA need to really clamp down on this.
