18. Must be a Michigan thing
We're in the same boat here in our house--they'll talk to our daughter but not us (unless it's to make arrangements about our daughter)

They are Repukes enjoying the tax cut of course.

The folks here at DU are so kind.

My husband and I enjoyed a very quiet but lovely dinner together and didn't talk about the 'others' at all.

"I" wish it wasn't so.

9. I join y'all too
whenever my educated fool Pug outlaw get together it's either racist talk, how much better they are doing than "those people" or I get some verbal jab.

Told the spouse they could come over on the condition that the verbal abuse had to stop, and if they did, he was to tell them to shut up and eat. Guess they decided it wasn't worth it. Good.

My uncle's family is repug but one of their daughters is the black sheep and a dem. My parents and I are dems too, and we're french, so we don't talk politics at Thanksgiving. At least they're mature enough not to cause a fight lol.

12. A lesbian couple, friends of ours living in Louisianna were uninvited
The businessman, conservative brother of one woman has been having them over for years, but called to uninvite them this year!!!!! Or excuse me, called to uninvite K's partner. K is welcome as long as B doesn't accompany her. Nice christofascist values. K was very hurt--it is real hard being gay/lesbian in Louisianna. Needless to say, K declined their kind offer. I sure wish they were up here, we would have tons o' fun.

Well, I'm taking a break here while I wait for the last things to cook.

Smells goooood

And as my Louisianna friends would say, have a Happy Thanksgiving, Y'ALL!

I'm disgusted that people would actually do that. Wouldn't it be fun to have all us 'unwelcome' folks together for a TurkeyFest? :)

15. Wow. What area of Louisiana?
Baton Rouge and New Orleans are pretty progressive towns. Your friend's relatives must live in a rather rural area.

25. I'm not sure where the brother lives, but K and B are in Lake Charles.
Mr Fuzz grew up in Sulphur. He met and became friends with K at the Louisianna School for the Deaf. Funny how Mr Fuzz has pretty progressive values, in spite of growing up redneck. Maybe becuase the school for the Deaf had students from all over the state, so it was less parochial than his hometown? I dunno, just speculating.....

New ORleans rules.

32. hey bettyellen--the recipes worked out great!!
thanks! I never brined turkey before. That was neat! and the sweet potato gratin--oy!! heavenly. I added toasted pecans, which was perfect.

christofascists--yes, I heard that many many years ago in the 80's! From a gay friend who was active in ACT UP. I thought it was so appropos. Who knew just how appropos it was going to turn out to be??

I use it in my sig line, which has offended some people here, sadly. But hey, I am strongly disgusted by immoralists hiding their hate and control issues behind that name.

Hope your Thanksgiving was good! :D

33. Glad that worked out- I am trolling for a recipe right now on the board ..
Adding pecans is always a good thing! Well done! You know, everybody's sig line looks so bleached out I can't read them, it should not offend anyone christofacist is not the same as christian, It's a quite different thing. I think it gets a small "c" for suppoting the death penalty, for starters. Don't get me started ver here, Irish Catholic, named after my aunt the nun. And as strict as they were, they've got nothing on the c-facists today. They believed in real charity and good deeds at least, and tough love was what god did to you, not what you imposed on your impoverished neighbors!

13. I wasn't invited either...
No worries though, I made my own bird and me and the hubby and daughter will enjoy it. Since the republicans that don't like me are my in-laws it's not too hard on me.

I did have the option of flying out to CA and seeing my Democrat side of the family, but we just couldn't afford it this year. At least they still love me. :)

20. We're doing the same thing
At least I don't have to get dragged around my inlaw's house listening to vacuous commentary about new furniture, decor etc.
(which is ultimately the only reason they invite anyone anyway...to stuff it up everyone's butts about how "successful" they are)

22. Ah yes....my inlaws
live in a $200,000+ home, she drives a lincoln continental, he has a giant dooley, they have an entire room that no one is actually allowed in - the formal living room. She's been out of work for like a year, and they are "scrimping"....but they recently bought a seven person hot tub.

I live in a single wide trailer and was thrilled to get a portable dishwasher from my parents for my birthday. (Only because they hit it big at a casino in LA)...They have no idea what it means to be without.

24. Don't kid yourself
I know a lot of people that work in very vulnerable industries currently and they are swimming in debt.

It will eventually bite them in the ass--they just don't know it yet...but UNFORTUNATELY these fools are taking the rest of this country along for the ride with them! :(

16. The Bush legacy at work
I've had Republican family members and friends for years and the atmosphere was never this poisonous. The Bushies know how to win elections. But the aftermath of their blazing trail of nuclear winter politics is a population that can't speak to each other with respect or consideration. The Bushies have marshalled their hate-filled legions of talk radio to cut a wide swath between us. There is no middle ground. "You're either with us, or against us." We're the enemy now. And every day the hate-talkers demonize us. And then we're supposed to sit down and be polite and pass the turkey?
Our country is in pain. I wish for all of us that we had better leadership.

23. Bush doesn't understand
that being a statesman means reaching out to those who don't share his goals. He doesn't want to consider solutions. He's single-minded and surrounds himself with yesmen (and women). He a petty tyrant who believes there's one way. My way or the highway. And his adherents believe the same. We're a most uncivil nation. The leadership defines the atmosphere. And ours is toxic.

21. I agree! I remember when Clinton ran the first time
I was a big open supporter of Clinton and the Repukes I knew used to rib me and we'd exchange friendly banter about it, but it was no big deal.

I used to enjoy going at it with my father about the Repuke vs the Dem thing but it was always more of a sporting event than a devisive situation. It never got ugly and when I jammed him on a point he'd laugh in a touche' type fashion.

Those types of Republicans I think have all converted to being anti-bush and have been replaced by these knuckle dragging CC type buffoons!
