Could someone explain the origin or meaning of term "jones-ing"
A friend said to me the other day, "I'm Jones-ing for a leg of lamb". She didn't know what it meant or where the term came from, but she thought it sounded cute. I tild her I had no idea where the saying came from, but I told her I'd submit it to DU. Any help here?

Thanks!

2. As I understand it -
it was because Jones St. in NYC was a hangout for junkies.

13. Actually "Jones" referred to the neighborhood drug dealer
the way "john" refers to a prostitute's client. They had to remain nameless, of course, so if necessary, they were introduced as Mr. Jones. You had to wait until Mr. Jones had something to sell, and you suffered in the meantime, that is, your "jones would come down."

21. "keeping up with Jones: the Jones are keeping up with their "habits".

Drug habits, that is. Very simple. "The Jones' have a car, I want a car."

3. Old drug slang
Meaning you're hurting for a fix. Now it means a comparably intense craving for whatever.

4. Don't know it's origins exactly...
...but it's long been a popular term for going through drug withdrawals. A Google search should turn something up.

5. Well I know it goes back to the late 60s
and maybe even earlier. Usually in the context of heroin addiction, i.e. My Jones's are coming down on me!" I think of the poem by the Last Poets, "Jones Coming Down".

6. I think it's an old drug term...
Like if you REALLY need some heroin for your addiction.

Then there was the Cheech y Chong song "Basketball Jones" that took it mainstream, near as I can remember.

10. 'Basketball Jones' (1973) Was a Parody of 'Love Jones'
an erstwhile popular tune by The Brighter Side of Darkness (1972).

Now, for jones, I found several sources (online slang dictionaries) that define it as a euphemism for heroin, but only one that gave a possible origin.

From "The Rap Dictionary" (an online site)

Jones

(n) A craving for something. It is said to come from Jones Alley in Manhattan where junkies used to live. E.g.: "Baseball Jones": needing baseball, "love Jones": a dire craving for someone, "Jonesing for some MJ": wanting some marijuana. I got a love Jones for your body and skin tone" -- Method Man & Mary J. Blidge (You are all I need <1994>).

there is a song called "Soulsville" and the lyrics mention
someone coming down on a "20 dollar jones", If I remember
correctly.

11. Yeah, from the 60's
Supposedly related to Jones Alley in Manhattan, a notoriously associated with drug addicts. So, "jonesing" would mean craving or addicted.

15. i had always thought the phrase was a bastardization of the phrase
"keeping up with the Joneses" meaning to want what your neighbor has. I thought to "Jones" meant you want something you couldn't/didn't have. I could be wrong.

Think back to your early 70's soul music.

"Me and Mrs. Jones
We got a thing goin' on"

Kinda all falls into place. Set and setting.
