Attn Gay people: Is my joke funny?

My boss just tasked me with going through the database and finding all employees that have same sex domestic partners. You could say I'm on a "fag finding mission"? Get it? Izzat funny? Some of my best friends are gay (seriously), and I think it's pretty clever, but as a hetero, am I being non-PC?

And its your boss whos on the fag finding mission, your just a tool of the man. ;)

Why does your boss want this information? Is he planning to give gay couples benefits, or is he against homosexuality?

it's not funny. I'm straight, but I still find it an offensive word.

IMO, it's the worst thing you can call a Gay man. Almost, but not quite as bad as calling a Black man a N*gg*r. So, no, it's not funny, even if you were Gay.

trying to take out the sting of the epithet.

When the same epithet is used by non-member of the oppressed group, it retains that sting.

And, yes, the term has long been used by gays in an attempt at humor -- well over a decade ago, I saw a horse-riding group in the SF Gay Pride Parade that called itself 'Fags on Nags.' This is clearly different from the case should the group have not called itself this but a heterosexual applied the name.

In the way that you're not sure if it's maliciousness or just hideous taste at work.

The joke is so-so, so I wouldn't use it.

I'd like to know why the boss is looking at same-sex partners. Is he planning some sort of targetting?

The reason I posted this was because I had told that joke earlier today to 2 of my co-workers. One is a lesbian and the other a gay male, and they both thought it was funny. I've known both of these people for over a year, and we're quite close, at least as close as co-workers can be who aren't sleeping with each other. We often joke around like that, and I'm quite flattered that they consider me 'hip' enough (or cool enough, or whatever) to discuss their lifestyles with me, a blatant hetero. I expected quite a bit more flaming than I got from the good folks here at DU. I guess this place is a bit less uptight and much more forgiving than I thought. Thanks for your kinder-than-expected reactions, and I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my little experiment. BTW, the Plaid Adder's coming out guide is great.

I'm pretty hard to offend though. I even think the barstool joke and the hot tub joke are both funny. I'm not offended by epithets like 'fag', or by jokes with stereotypes in them. The only kind of gay jokes which offend me are the blatantly hateful ones.

If you're quite close then I'm betting they'll think it's funny too. If they don't then they should be close enough to tell you and you can apologize.

Im not a especially pc person but that joke is pretty sucky, i dont get what the joke is either to be honest.
