No independent movie theaters here, who else is in my situation?

So we can vent??


I live in Southern Indiana, in a town with 250,000 citizens and NOT a single indy theater. WTF...we have 4 or 5 regular movie theaters but nothing to broaden people's cinematic vision.
The worst thing is, we are getting an IMAX...but still NO INDEPENDENT MOVIE THEATER. Like people just don't give a crap about anything that's not American or mainstream.

I hate this red town! I wanted to catch Audrey Tautou's latest movie she stars in. A great movie about the effects of war called "A very long engagement"

edit: another movie I wanted to watch too: Supersize Me. But nooooo.....

to pick from here in southeastern CT BUT nothing "down the street". I can go to New Haven or Hartford CT, Cambridge/Boston MA, Providence RI, or travel two hours to NYC(which I don't do for a movie but its an option).

That DOES suck for you because I know I rarely like or go to see mainstream movies. ever.

I have to wait till they come to DVD...and even then, not all of them are for rent, so I would have to order them online. BLEH

Sounds like you live in the New London area. I was stationed there too for a while. I lived in Groton on Poquonnock Road near the Electric Boat yard.

I am not here because of navy though I am about 10 minutes away from New London in the shadow of Mohegan Sun casino (Uncasville, next to Norwich).

There was no casino when I lived there. My geography is a little shaky after +30 years, but I resided for a short time in Montville, which I believe is very near Uncasville.

Do any of the area libraries/colleges have film series?

If so, you're probably familiar with the Vogue Theater, which (I just found out) closed in 1998 :( I'm sorry. I used to frequent the Vogue back in the early '80s.

but that's about the population of the metro area. I live in Owensboro, and I share your desire for an indy film venue somewhere in the region.

EVERY movie theater in Northern Humboldt county is locally owned, IIRC. The only sort-of problem is that they're ALL owned by the same local company. Every one. It's not much of a problem, though.

of bad road to the nearest indy theater from where I am. Sucks, doesn't it? It's why I signed up with Netflix. I have to wait a while for the movies to come out on DVD, but at least I get to see them ... because the vid stores around here sure don't!

The manager of the larger theater around here doesn't even show anytihng but the biggest "blockbusters". He was quoted in the paper as saying that the people around here couldn't deal with anything deeper than the latest Bruce Willis movie. Whatever, jerk.

You probably have to go to Louisville, Nashville, or St Louis to see foreign films, don't you ?

I used to live in Evansville...my daughter was born there. Our house was just west of Bosse High School.

And I can't believe I need to go so far to watch a movie. An indy venue here is definitely not a luxury.

I wonder why nobody's thought of it already. Or is it that they think people are just too stupid to be interested...? But with 2 universities and other schools you'd think....

The old theatre on Washington near U of E would occasionally show interesting stuff...that was where you went to watch Rocky Horror when we lived there.

and forget going to Indy, the you can't get there from here place.

I liked living there, nice place but missing some cultural amenities.

Nice museum though.

Don't feel too bad. Here in Fort Worth, a much larger city, it is hard to get to the art films too since most of them show in Dallas only.

One of the big art houses in D cooperates w/ the Modern Art Museum here in FW to show films on weekends. "Magnolia at the Modern" So we can see whatever they send over. Sometimes the big AMC downtown will put an art film in one of its smaller screening rooms.
