Don'tcha just HATE awkward social situations? I do.
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 05:57 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
So all the people who live in five houses on this street got together and were having a bit of fun and decided they haven't seen us enough, so they all came over here and two of them are the bush voters I have taken pains to avoid (but have explained why to them). VERY FREAKING AWKWARD.

The Democrats in the group were looking at me like "Sorry!" and one called me right after they left to say that the bush voters were all talking smack about how they never see me anymore and "what's her problem anyway?" and "let's go over there and find out!" and they felt like they couldn't stop it. They are the kind of people (the Dems in the group) who just go along to get along and I just can't do that anymore.

So anyway, THAT was fun. I was perfectly nice, but didn't linger long as I really do have a horrendous sinus headache. I thanked them for stopping by and they went on their way.

Why don't the two bush voters GET the message? I've already told them point-blank why I cannot carry on a one-sided friendship with them anymore (where I was always doing things for them and NOT vice versa). I even emailed them that great open letter on the GD forum from a woman who works in NYC to bush voters.

They are either clueless or acting like it. On edit: there's nothing wrong with ending a friendship, especially if you are upfront about your reasons why. But when the other person won't let go, it tends to create awkward situations. Especially when they live on your STREET. I'm just thankful for the other Dems on the street who DO understand and agree with me, but just don't want to cause any problems.

1. If I did that in Montana
I wouldn't have any friends at all. Best just to ignore politics and take them for what they are, people who got hoodwinked. Talking with most people who voted bush it seems they were just badly informed, all they really knew about Kerry either came from the bush campaign or biased media. You need to come to the realization that doesn't necessarily make them bad people.

No, they were NOT just badly informed. She had ME, she asked me questions, ALL the time, on where the two candidates stood on all kinds of issues (no she didn't know where bush stood on most).

She is someone who had this to say about the Iraq war:

"I don't care that we're killing Iraqis. They're all terrorists, anyway."

And this:

"The war in Iraq makes me feel better about September 11th. It's revenge for that day."

When I reminded her they had nothing to do with that day, she shrugged her shoulders and said "Still makes me feel better."

Doesn't necessarily make them bad people? Her "moral" positions make my skin crawl. How can I possibly reconcile being "friends" with such a person? This started long before she voted for bush, but her vote for bush was the nail in the coffin.

On edit: she also breaks her arm patting herself on the back for being a good Christian. Combined with her views on how disposable Iraqis are, I don't see how she can be seen as a good anything.

3. Terrific! You can run...but you can't hide (from * voting idiots who are
too insensitive and dense to get a clue!)

It's good that you have sympathetic Dem neighbors to rely upon/commiserate with. They seem to be too nice to the *bors, though.

Sinus headaches royally suck (saith the Lady). Hope you feel better soon! :hi:

4. Yeah they are, but that's just them.
They just go along to get along, like I said. They only barely tolerate them and they do it just so as not to rock the boat, so to speak. Again, I just can't do that anymore. I used to, but I can't.

7. I agree...there is too much at stake to play "nicey-nice" anymore.
You don't have to get into knock-down drag-out (even though you REALLY would like to sometimes), but there is no reason to "just go along" with people with whom you disagree, either.

8. No desire whatsoever to
"get into it" with them. Nope. I just want to be off their social list. Because they sure as hell are off mine.

And in truth, have been for a while, but like I said, the actual VOTE for bush nailed it shut.

Their son is due to go into the Army in two years. Sigh.

10. We all know people like them.
There are two women who are attending school with me, both * voters. When I asked why, their reply was "better the devil ya know than the devil ya don't." Both have draft age children.

Sigh doesn't begin to cover it!

5. I remember your post about only doing things for Democrats now
and your neighbors sounded like mine. Well this "coming over" as a group is pretty brazen.

"I already told them point-blank why I cannot carry on a one-sided friendship with them anymore" What was their response or did they just do a collective pug duh. Did you get a blank look?

PS you have at least some Dem neighbors (I'd just about kill for Democrat neighbors. I don't have any and it is a bad situation)

6. Yeah, in fact, oddly
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 06:07 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
there are only three families on this street *that I know of* who voted for bush. If there are more (and I think there are) they don't say anything about it.

The rest are all Dem. There were a LOT of Kerry signs on my street. And three bush signs.

On edit: When I told them why I didn't want to continue a friendship with them, they just seemed sort of shell shocked and said "ok" and that was about it. And I assumed that was the end of it.

12. one more thing; when I have talked to my pug next door neighbors
they KNEW in no uncertain terms I meant business. It wasn't politics (because no one discusses politics around here; an untouchable subject), it was their kids and animals constantly on my property without my permission. I am now the witch of the neighborhood. Plus, because I had Kerry signs in front of my house and I am the ONLY dem on this block, I have to wonder why they haven't burned me out yet.
