I'm Watching Full Metal Jacket Tonight... And I'm Wondering...
... does God really have a hard-on for Marines?

I just paused the movie after the "field interviews" with the troops. It's truly strange that the things these guys are saying about the Vietnam war and the Vietnamese could just as easily be said about the Iraq war and the Iraqis.

You know... that we're unappreciated, and that the gooks would rather be alive than free, and that they want us out.

Even though there are many memorable lines and funny moments in that movie, the music and images and message is haunting and disturbing. I guess that's why it's one of my favorites.

Door Gunner: Anyone who runs is V.C. Anyone who stands still is well-disciplined V.C.
-----------
Private Joker: How can you shoot women and children?
Door Gunner: Easy... you don't lead 'em so much. (laughs) Ain't war hell?

4. I don't think there was a Kubrick film I didn't find myself reflecting on
for some time after. All his movies seemed to be filmed with different layers of meaning. What seemed obvious, upon 2nd or 3rd go around took on different meanings. I know it may seem odd nowadays, but his films actually made the viewer "think"!
