Pit bulls
How many of you own Pit Bulls? I've always been afraid of them but have friends who own them and love them. Yet, here in my state pit bulls are always in the news for attacking people.

2. I've known three people with pit bulls. Both people who had females
were the owners of two of the sweetest, friendliest dogs I've ever seen.

My brother had the third. It was a male named Festus. It was okay with the immediate family but otherwise that was the meanest dog I've ever come across. Of course, he lived in a bad neighborhood and trained it to be a watch dog. If John was around, it was okay. But otherwise, look out.

3. The media is FULL OF SHIT! Mine was the best dog ever.

I know, surprise surprise. They say use the term 'pit bull' very loosely. I had one for 6 years. He passed way too young earlier this year. He was raised by a cat. The best guy ever. Sweet as pie. I shared your fear when my ex brought him home, but quickly changed tunes.

BEST. DOG. EVER!

I will post a pic soon.

4. I have one. She was an abandoned put -- 3 weeks old
no body knew what breed she was. We bought her a dog when she was 12 weeks old and she is just an angel. She is 11 years old and has been our kids best friend since they were both born.

5. Any dog can be made into a mean dog.....
if mistreated and tortured.
Pitbulls have strong jaws and instincts that certain people misuse to compensate for their own inadequacies. They think that walking around with big, mean dogs makes them seem more macho. (Same concept as having a gun, a big cigar or driving a Hummer)
No dog is born mean unless it has a brain tumor or something like that. It is true that some dogs are better suited to be with children than others, but that is common sense. The same is true of some people I know.

7. My future MIL owns a female, trained for personal protection.

She is the coolest, sweetest, and toughest dog around. She is possibly the smartest animal I have ever met - she's so intelligent it's almost like having another person around. She knows probably over 50 English words (rough estimate), and is clearly able to reason through problems.

She's trained to kill if her owners are threatened, and is over 90 lbs of solid muscle, but she's so gentle and sweet otherwise that she has self-appointed herself Protector Of Kittens around the farm. She gets angry if she smells a predator like a coyote or a bear outside and she knows the cats are out there - they have to tie her up so that she won't go get in fights with predators trying to protect the other animals. The barn cats follow her around and love on her to the point where she never has space to herself - everytime she lays down, she has 3 or 4 cats on top of her purring happily away. I've never seen a dog so adored by other animals.

I'm not a dog person and I love this dog. She always has a big doggy smile on her face (which on pit bulls looks menacing! :-)) and she remembers me even when I haven't seen her in over a year. Getting to know this dog has really sold me on pit bulls, and if I ever get a dog, that's probably what I'll get.
