2. I don't think the pop vote is really as broad as that
The Midwest is definitely pop country, but the Northwest? I lived in WA state for a year, and I didn't hear pop there.
What do you native NWers say?

8. POP POP POP
i'm from a suburb outside of chicago (midwestern country and BLUE STATE) and have always said "pop" when referring to a bubbly soft drink (preferably diet coke). one thing i have noticed is that, in my experience, people in wheaton (a highly conservative town complete with religious colleges and home of one of bush's speech writers) have a tendency to say "soda".
....hummmmmm

18. Ack, Wheaton.
What makes you ever go to Wheaton... that place is hell on Earth.

I'm from Arlington Heights, and I thought some of the neighborhoods around here were bad... and then I went to Wheaton.

14. One summer, when I was a kid . . .
. . . visiting relatives in New York City, my cousins found dozens of reasons to laugh at me--including the time when I answered Aunt Anne's question with, "Yes, thank you. I'd like some pop." . . . only to learn that "some pop" meant half of a "Popsickle"! Talk about confusion: Didn't I know--nyah, nyah!--that the fizzy stuff in a bottle was "soda" and that "pop" comes on a stick? Well, now . . .

(Hrmph!) . . . maybe they didn't have any better sense than to call a small hick-town bottle of pop a "soda" in the BIG city; but, back home? Well . . . back home, a REAL soda was a special concoction served in a tall glass (at the Kandy Kitchen's soda fountain)--served in a tall glass with a straw and a lon-n-ng-handled spoon and, yes, a few soda crackers on the side--but, in addition to being fizzy, a REAL "soda" contained ice cream and fruit. So, there!

;)
