LIMA — The Quiz Bowl team from Allen East Middle School huddled around a scoring bracket Monday night.
The team had a bye during the last round of the seventh- and eighth-grade Academic Quiz Bowl, and was waiting to see if it would place third in the tournament. The waiting was getting to the students.
“I’d rather be in there knocking one of the teams out,” Zachary Dunn said, admitting he was getting very nervous.
“We have no control over it now,” added Josh Smith. “It’s up to fate.”
When the other teams’ matches were over, word spread quickly that Allen East was in a tie for third place with teams from Wapakoneta and Shawnee middle schools.
There were high-fives all around, but the wait continued. Third-place would now go to the team with the most total points. Fate this year went to Wapakoneta, with Shawnee and Allen East taking fourth and fifth places.
Monday’s tournament marked the end of the seventh- and eighth-grade Academic Quiz Bowl season. The Allen County Educational Service Center runs the Quiz Bowl.
