A travesty: African Queen isn't on DVD
It's hard to stump NetFlix, but when I searched for The African Queen, I never would have guessed they didn't have it. Come to find out, it's not available on DVD. Why would Bogie's only Academy Award performance not be on DVD?

With all the crap that makes it onto discs, you'd think this great classic could make it.

1. check Amazon, I could have sworn that I saw it on DVD there
but I could be wrong. If it is available through Amazon, it may just be a matter of time before Netflix has it. And if it isn't available yet, Amazon will tell you. Also, if it is pending release, that info will be in AMazon, also.

2. A lot of these
have rights issues, or the film negative is in terrible shape and a lot of work is going into restoring it for dvd. Rest assured it'll get there sooner or later--a few years ago, there was tons of classic stuff unavailable. At this point, it's pretty much African Queen and Bringing Up Baby.

5. I don't understand this.
"The African Queen" is a classic. It was, as you said, Bogart's Academy Award winning (and justifiably so) performance. And the chemistry between Bogie and Hepburn was absoltely wonderful.

Perhaps in the future "African Queen" can make it to DVD.

6. Request it...
If you have an Amazon account, you can suggest movies that you'd like to see in DVD format.

7. It's an archival issue...
From a NY Times Article on "Greatest DVD's Never Made"

"Paramount knows there's demand for a DVD of "The African Queen," but the studio is in no rush, letting its archivists search for better film materials."

8. Hopefully under restoration
It would be nice if they gave it the same treatment as Robin Hood, or what I've read about Gone With The Wind.

There's an Errol Flynn swashbuckler double they've supposedly restored - Captain Blood and Sea Hawk. I guess they're waiting for the right moment to put them on the market.
