Anyone been to the Kentucky Derby?

I'm a native Kentuckian, and I have never been to the Derby. Have any of y'all been brave/crazy enough to go?

1. I lived in Kentucky for 21 years and I have never been either

although my grandfather had a box and went every year. He had promised me that after I was 18 he would take me to the Derby and he died before my 18th birthday, the family lost the box and I never got to go

But I watch it every year and cry over "My Old Kentucky Home"

Where do you live?

2. I marched in the parade once

With the Pikeville, KY High School Marching Band. I think it was 1981. Four long miles in inch-thick felt uniforms on a hot day. With a sousaphone on my shoulder and a 2-foot shako on my head. Sheer torture. To this day, I hate anything associated with the Derby, excepting Hunter Thompson.

But I'd LOVE to. There are plenty of horse racing forums that you can ask for advice on, regarding transportation, accomodation, etc.

And I have always lived 15-20 minutes away from the Pimlico Racetrack here in Maryland.
