Maurice Clarett - biggest jackass ever?
Even if by some miracle he wins this lawsuit, he's a second round pick at best, say the prognosticators. What a friggin dumbass.

Maurice Clarett Sues NFL Over Eligibility Rule
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=577&ncid=577&e=1&u=/nm/20030923/sp_nm/nfl_lawsuit_dc

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Suspended Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett filed an antitrust suit against the National Football League on Tuesday over a rule keeping him out of the 2004 draft because of his high school graduation date.

At issue is a regulation that bars any player from joining the NFL before he has been out of high school for three years or before he has completed three college seasons.

Clarett, who will turn 20 next month, would not be able to play in the NFL under its current rules until 2005. He graduated from high school in December 2001...

Clarett was suspended from the Ohio State team earlier this month for at least a year after he was accused of misleading investigators and breaking National Collegiate Athletic Association bylaws on benefits for athletes.

1. Actually he may well win his case
In any other profession he would have the right to leave school
and work for anyone he wants. The draft in and of itself is
a restraint of trade.

On the other hand I agree that Clarett must be a complete jackass
to have so royally screwed up the great situation he had for
himself.

2. Jackass? Yeah. But is he wrong?
In the end, I don't think so. Who is the NFL to say when and at what time you will be able to work for them. Unless you are a minor, and not legally able to make your own decisions, you should be able to apply for any job you are qualified for.

For example - if you were trying to get a job in the local McDonald's (because you really needed the $$$), AND you were the most qualified -but they wouldn't look at you because you were either:

pick your discrimination here

- wrong color
- wrong gender
- wrong sexual orientation
- wrong age
- wrong political party
- too heavy
- too ugly, etc.

wouldn't you get a little honked off? Especially if you had a letter in your hand admitting the reason why they were discriminating?

Granted - Clarett sounds like a jackass. But sometimes a jackass can make a valid and legal argument against something that is discriminatory.

Should most college athletes stay in school for four years? Yes.
Does the NFL have a right to mandate this? Only if they are a monopoly.

Just my two hundredths of a dollar...

3. Possibly.
I don't have anything against him, but he seems to make mistake after mistake. He has some bad advisors, I think.

It's really a shame. He could have been one of the great ones. It's still possible for him to play at OSU next year, but I don't see it happening.

5. Can't comment on if he...
...is an ass or not. He is not the first kid to feel like he is owed a hell of a lot more than free schooling for what he puts out on the field and handle the situation poorly.

As far as restraint of trade goes, the NFL Players Association and the owners actually agree on this one: Yes, it is restraint and for a good reason.

An exceptional 18 year old hockey player or (baseball or soccer or basketball) can compete with pros in their sport (business?). Pro football, however, is insane as fas as just how physically devestating it is. The vast majority of kids really need to be pushing their early 20's before they've gotten strong enough to hack it.

Any other sport, 18 years old teams could go out and play with adults. They'd lose but they could play.

You'd need a MASH unit if Ohio State played The Bengals.

Clarett may been an exception and there are some but on the whole it is simply dangerous.

4. The NFL is 30 years behind the NBA, that's all
Two words: "Spencer" and "Haywood". ("Moses" and "Malone" also come to mind.) The NBA's been taking players out of high school for years, now. Probably because they wouldn't have a leg to stand on, otherwise, if it ever came to a court fight.

Aside from the fact that he may have padded the inventory of his theft loss, what else do you have against this brother?

6. No I think that title is shared by Bosworth and Elway
Bosworth was an overrated hightackling juiced up jerk (though he started the Boz Sucks thing in Denver and then sold them the t-shirts)

Elway deserves the title because his little pigeon toed horse toothed chickensh*t a** refused to play in Baltimore.

11. Ahhh....whatsamatter? Widdle Coltsies couldn't keep Johnny?
As a lifelong Bronco fan, may I politely say:

Too. Fucking. Bad.

It's a business. He took a calculated risk. He won.

See you at the Hall of Fame acceptance awards.
