"Joe Montana and Jerry Rice"

In the league today it is Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens

Of all time without a question: Montana/Rice

19. Stabler was the man...
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 09:37 PM by BullGooseLoony
I got my step-dad, a die-hard Raider fan an autographed picture of Stabler for Christmas a few years back...he damned near broke down. The picture was of a game against Minnesota, I believe, that the Raiders won. Don't remember which one it was, but it was a pretty important one.

Has it hanging up in his office, now. :)

8. bradshaw/swann. the montana/rice voters must be too young to see straight
montana/rice was certainly a nice combo, but much of their magic had to do with the fact that they were NOT the greatest combo ever. they failed to connect enough to make it dramatic, yet always seemed to pull it out in the clutches. this made for wonderful games from a spectator point of view, highly dramatic. but less than ideal from a coach's standpoint.

bradshaw/swann had it where others lacked it, and that combo worked largely due to sheer improvisation and athleticism on bradshaw's part and swann's superglue grip and an ability to really take the hit on the way down and hold on to the ball.

15. and that the 1970's Steelers were above all running teams
Both Bradshaw and Swann were great players, but they weren't central to their team's success. The Steelers won because of their great defense and running game. While the occasional (and very well timed) pass was necessary, I wouldn't go so far as to call Bradshaw-Swann the greatest QB-WR combo ever.

25. but that's my point. bradshaw/swann did it themselves
montana/rice had the benefit of an entire team geared toward the pass. montana often had all the time in the world to find the open man. bradshaw, on the other hand, often found swann on broken plays.

29. They can't be the GREATEST if they weren't central to their team's success
I'm not saying they weren't great. I just don't think an essentially secondary part of any offense can be considered the greatest anything of all time.

31. that's a bit of results mongering.
they would have had more impressive numbers if they had the front line for passing. but their front line was built for rushing instead. but if you say that takes away from the qb/wr combo, then you're saying that the question really is who's the greatest qb/wr/line combo. but that's not the question.

given the same line, i'd put my money on bradshaw/swann over any other qb/wr combo.

Seriously, who voted for that? If you're going to put that up there, you may as well include Majkowski/Sharpe. Or Favre/Freeman.

I agree, Aikman/Irvin should definitely be on there.

On edit: It doesn't take people 15 years to adjust to such a ridiculously successful strategy. Look at Howard Dean- he got it in less than 8.

Tim Brown had to look over at Rice and think "what could have been".

BTW- Rice is a jackass. He has completely diowned his community roots his school (Mississippy Valley State) and his family.

34. Whaa?
What are you talking about?

Yeah, I think he should be retired by now, and I know he can sometimes be a dick in person...but...the guy is....probably the best PLAYER to ever play the game, if you judge by how far he's separated from others in his position.

He has about 20 records that are never...I mean NEVER...going to be broken...on top of about 40 records that he simply has.

Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 10:59 PM by BullGooseLoony
because he just retired early. In his own words, he was just too good for the game. Had about 8 years under his belt, I believe.

But, Rice...if your criteria for "Best Player Ever" is being unbelievably beyond all other players playing the position, you might have a candidate, there.

22. We played "Namath to Maynard" as a kid but NOTE-Pennigton to Moss
at Marshall, granted playing well above their competition but it was quite incredible to watch-LIVE!

BTW- Pennington only ended up at Marshall because of an uncle knowing someone and he was third string until the first game of his Freshman year at UT-Chattanooga because #'s 1 & 2 got hurt. The rest is history. He sat out his Sophmmore year to let a transfer play (and win the National Championship).
