Am I the only one who proofreads before I post ?
Who else proofs their posts for grammar, spelling and coherence before they hit 'post message' ?

I've noticed lately that there are a ton of peeps on DU - for a variety of reasons, I'm sure - who are really spelling/grammar impaired.

What's the deal ??

3. I do.
Nothing worse than debating someone who can't spell. Not that I'm the spelling police, but it makes people's posts really painful to read when they are too busy mangling the English language to make a coherent point.

8. sometimes, I'm too stoned to remember to proof
or even spell check. I know it's only a chat board thinger, but I notice it and sometimes want to say something, but it isn't an English paper or final exam.

9. I (heart) the spell check option
Sometimes when I'm typing out my thoughts, I tend to go too fast and make errors. The spell checker is a life saver!

20. When you post...
...look to the left of the "post message" button. You should see a "Check spelling" button. Click on it, and your post is edited.
For italics, just have brackets [] enclosing an "i". After you're done typing the section you want italicized, put another [] but with /i enclosed.
Hope that helps! :hi:

Which is why you will often see the little red "This post edited" message at the top of my posts.

11. I never double-check
I post, and if I read through later and see a glaring mistake, I correct it.

I look at DU as kind of an informal gathering place where we don't have to be on our Ps and Qs as far as grammar and spelling go.

When I am lecturing or in my professional environment, I am a stickler. On DU, though, I like that I can let my hair down, and, if I make a mistake, big deal.

13. I Have a Habit of Rereading and Proofing
which is hard to shake. Even then it doesn't catch everything. (For example, I can never remember that there is one 'n' in 'happening' and one 'r' in 'occurred.')

I can't understand some of the basic mistakes, either. I think it's a function of the IM culture where writing is conversational speech. But I think even younger nonacademic posters should realize that the word "lose" does NOT have two o's.

14. Puts on Nomex suit...
Yes, many people will come into this thread and point out your many ungrammatical posts from the past.

Yes, many people take offense when it is pointed out that perhaps it might be more polite to use the spell check button, despite the fact that you were able to decipher their misspelled words.

Yes, many people, myself included occasionally, will hit "Send" before spell checking or re-reading.

As an occasional professional copyeditor, I say just let it go. It only really important when you are publishing something for print or web, and you will offend dozens of folks here on DU.

19. No. I'm a compulsive proofreader.
I don't always catch my errors, however. That's the problem with trying to self-edit: I know what I meant to say, so I read it the "right" way even if I wrote it the "wrong" way.
