Geminid meteor shower tonight. Grab a bar of soap and a towel!
I'll be going out on the front deck shortly. I'll bundle up (it is 29-F and falling) and turn off all the lights. Look straight up for the Geminids. They come at the rate of about one per minute. It is severe clear here, and as I said, cold as a stone. Great viewing weather.

It is forecast to go down to 15-F tonight. High tomorrow in the NC mountains will not bust freezing. Two-dog night tonight .. Sirius and Nick-Nick!

On edit: The Army told me the risk was not in "dropping" the soap. It was in the presentation during a bend-over to pick-up the damn soap.

15. just like a gourmet dinner, presentation is everything
place feet firmly about a foot and a half apart. keep legs straight (as it were), bend slowly at the waist. you may balance with one hand while gently grasping the soap from the floor with the other. and .... just to add "icing" to the "cake", wiggle provcatively. and there you have it. a delightful "presentation".

and everyone should appreciate your "presentation". if not they are incredibly rude guests and should not be invited back.

20. Thanks for the instructions!
I'll have to write them on my palm for the next time I'm in some type of gang shower.

I just hope the water & soap doesn't wash away the ink! EEP. Then I'll be up a creek without a paddle. :scared:

3. Clear here too!
It is currently 25-F and is going to be 13-F later, about the same as you. We will freeze our butts off one more year to see. Sleeping bags on lawn chairs work well. Very clear out now, great viewing.

5. I live out in the country,
about 21 miles from the closest convenience store. For that lack of "covenience" we are treated to a planetarium exhibition every night. The stars have been exquisite for the past few evenings. It has been cold and crisp. It is not unusual to see a faint "shooting star" ocassionally, but the night before last I saw an unusually bright metorite - perhaps a precursor to the Geminids.

12. Lucky you!
We used to be in dark sky, not as far as you are but alas, we are surrounded by not only homes now but mansions with nothing but tons of lights. We keep moving and so do they. Your convenience is wonderful. The best I ever saw was the Perseids (??can't spell them) on a mountain in Colorado. Have fun, don't get too cold out there.

10. You'd have to get out of the metro to really see it best
I've thought about it, but driving out past Forest Lake just to get away from all the dang lights? Even then, you would have to get away from I-35. Besides, like you said, it's cold outside.

21. Great view in total darkness!
Cold as shit, but a great view of the Geminids from my cold, dark front deck. I counted 20 in 15 minutes. Meanwhile, Orion's belt pointed to my dog, Sirius. He was "Sirius" way before Sirius radio. Sirius is at my feet now. So is Nick-Nick. Canicula! Sirius is Greek for the dogstar, Canicula is Latin.

24. I counted at least that many!
One looked like a bottle rocket so close over my head that I thought I could reach up and touch it.

It was golden yellow and had a sparkly tail. Gorgeous!
