9. When I went back to work full time after my baby was born
my little English pointer mix, chewed all the heels on my other pairs of dress shoes. A definite act of protest. Only my dress shoes, not my husbands or my sneakers or sandals. Naughty little girl! :P

How many times does your dog poop in a day? Inside or out.

5. OMG---Don't get me started
I have had dogs most of my life and I have never had house-breaking issues. However my little doggie has gotten the best of us where this is concerned. I take her out 6 to 8 times a day. Praise her to no end when she goes outside but still.... she messes in the house. Tonight she messed in the kennel. I had taken her out before I left the house-she didn't go. She was in the kennel for all of an hour and a half. When I got home, I took her out again immediately, she had a small delivery then came back into the house and peed and pooped on the floor while my back was turned for a minute. The vet hasn't found any medical problems so I've come to the opinion it is sheer willful defiance.

I've been told that little dogs are harder to house train-but this is ridiculous. I've had a trainer come in and have worked with her very aggressively but with little success. Right now I'm just hoping that limiting her water and food intake to regular times (which I've been doing for the past 8 months!) will eventually just kick in. I've told my family that we are going to start tracking her potty times on a wall chart to see if we can see a pattern here. After tonights episode we'll be starting this tomorrow morning.

7. Hey, she wore those antlers, she can't be all bad.
I've had two small breed dogs and they were harder to train than my current two mid-sized galumphs.

One was eventually housebroken but leaked under stress (like the doorbell). The other learned to control his bodily functions so well he left piddle protests whenever his majesty was displeased. We knew it was purposeful because he only soiled shoes, pillows and other personal possessions of the offendee.

8. Suggestion: have you worked with her on "crate training"?
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 02:41 AM by ElectroPrincess
That is she will be less likely to pee or pooh while in a small wire crate (appropriate size). Perhaps your kennel is too large? ... it should be big enough so she can turn around but not fully get away from the pee or pooh. That way she'll be less likely to have an accident. If the kennel meets the above criteria, then sorry, persistence and patience is the only ticket beyond good timing. :( If not, read on.

Keep her in there for a few hours, THEN run her outside a.s.a.p.

The first thing she should do is pee like a Russian racehorse. Immediately after she's done, go *nuts* praising her and petting her ... yeah seriously nuts - jump up and down, pet her, run circles around the yard, give her a treat ... whatever it takes to make her super happy and know that you are "thrilled." You do "crate training" (keep her in the crate then outside immediately) it will be much more convenient and on your schedule.

I fully understand each dogie is different but if she sees you go nuts with happy behavior each and every time she goes outside, hopefully she'll catch on. You should have seen us with our sheepdog puppy ... the non-dog loving neighbors thought we were certifiable. But positive reinforcement works best.

Hope this helps. :-)

10. The crate training has met with little success
We have the tiniest crate and she will still pee in the crate sometimes after only being in there an hour of having a delivery outside. She doesn't seem to mind the crate-but she also doesn't seem to mind sitting in her own urine either. We had been keeping a blankie in there but that's now gone. She's on plastic now and still goes.

I know what you mean about being animated. My SO takes her out at 2:00 AM and I hear him practically kissing her feet every time she goes. I'm having a harder time being excited. I'm faking it but I'm tired of cleaning up on a daily basis. Next week-end we're pulling up the carpet in the bedroom. Thank god the rest of the house has Pergo or vinyl.

I think I just met a dog who may be more stubborn than I am. I love her to pieces but she got the best of me today.

I don't strike animals but I'm thinking about using a rolled up newspaper and striking the floor next to her as my next tactic. She has no fear- so I'm not even sure that would work. She would probably think it was a game and attack it.

I know that she will get it eventually--I just don't want to wait until I'm old, incontinant and peeing on the floor myself. Well at least then someone else will have to clean it up.

11. Awe, I thought so ...
You're right, some dog's are easier than others to housetrain. Yes, I feel really silly when after mine poohs on a walk I'm saying, "Good Girl!" while I'm wrenching in disgust from the smell before I tie a square knot in the plastic bag. Yuck! What we do for our pups.

Best wishes ... hope you get there soon. :-)

12. Thanks
I know that it's gonna happen--but sometimes the road is full of annoyances. But today's a new day....Maybe this is the day that little light will turn on in her doggie brain and she'll get it. My poor SO barely slept last night he was so worried about her sleeping in the kennel in another room without her blankie. He still got up at 2:30 to walk her.
