Plumbing help
Just bought new kitchen taps because I'm fed up with the old ones leaking.

I know how to install the new taps - that's not the problem.

How do I get the old ones out?

There's standard size (one inch?) copper pipe coming up from the basement. Somebody soldered on a smaller size pipe leading up to the taps. I don't care about that, i'll cut it away and install plastic tubing. The problem is that it goes up into a black plastic thingie that rotates and terminates with a copper nut that looks like it might be soldered.

Specific questions:

  1. I can't get in there with any sort of wrench or pliers. How do I turn the nut?
  2. What is the black plastic thing for?
  3. If I pull the entire sink, will the black plastic things separate?

1. I forget what it's called

but it's a special kind of wrench that auto-adjusts and has the hook part on a joint so you can snake it up into tight places that would never accomodate a real wrench. I thought it was called a plumber's wrench but a search on that term only turns up monkey wrenches. I'll keep looking.

On edit: Here's one - they call it a basin wrench.

On further edit: a drawing of one being used.

2. You need a basin wrench.
The only tool that will do it.
Lowes or Home depot.
15 or 20 bucks.
