The first thing I remember knowin' was a lonesome whistle blowin'
And a youngun's dream of growin' up to ride
On a freight train leavin' town, not knowin' where I'm bound
And no one could change my mind but Mama Tried.

One and only rebel child from a family meek and mild
My Mama seemed to to know what lay in store
'Spite of all my Sunday learnin' towards the bad I kept on turnin'
'Til Mama couldn't hold me anymore.

And I turned twenty-one in prison doin' life without parole
No one could steer me right but Mama Tried, Mama Tried
Mama Tried to raise me better but her pleading I denied
And that leaves only me to blame, cause Mama Tried

Dear ole' daddy, rest his soul left my mom a heavy load
She tried so very hard to fill his shoes
Workin' hours without rest, wanted me to have the best
She tried to raise me right but I refused.

And I turned twenty-one in prison doin' life without parole
No one could steer me right but Mama Tried, Mama Tried
Mama Tried to raise me better but her pleading I denied
And that leaves only me to blame, cause Mama Tried.

Yup. That's right. It's a Merley and Haggard kinda night. ;-)

2. Nothing's sadder than a sad train song...
If you miss the train I知 on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles,
A hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles,
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

Lord I知 one, lord I知 two, lord I知 three, lord I知 four,
Lord I知 500 miles from my home.
500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles
Lord I知 five hundred miles from my home.

Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name
Lord I can稚 go a-home this a-way
This a-away, this a-way, this a-way, this a-way,
Lord I can稚 go a-home this a-way.

If you miss the train I知 on you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

6. I was actually listening to the Grateful Dead version,
but the sentiment's the same.

I should pop in the Merle version. The fine people of Oklahoma could use a pick-me-up after what my Blue Devils did to their basketball team earlier. :D

4. Silver Wings...shining in the sunlight.
Roaring engines...headed somewhere in flight
They're takin' you away
And leavin' me lonely...

Love Merle...love him!

8. "When a president goes through the White House door"
and does what he says he'll do
We'll all be drinking that free bubble up
And eatin' that rainbow stew

"Rainbow Stew"
