I'm a Mainer too (but I've been living the last almost 3 years in Florida). I essentially lived there for almost all of my life, from birth until I was almost 23. We're going to be moving back to the New England area next summer, to be closer to Maine and my family (and also because we hate Florida). I would love to live in Maine again, it just depends on if we can get jobs there. Almost all of my friends from high school have moved to places like Massachusetts because they can't find decent jobs (or jobs in the field they to school for) in Maine. I think most of them would love to still be living there, too. Maine really does have a problem keeping Maine high school and college graduates in Maine. There are just not enough good jobs for all the young people. It's a wonderful place to live and raise a family, though. I feel very fortunate to have grown up there.

Don't like where i grew up much but like the coast and the Portland area!! :thumbsup:

I've been to every state except for Alaska and Hawii. There are prettier states than Ohio and there are richer states, but we really have it pretty good here. It doesn't cost too much to live here and before Bush took office it wasn't too difficult to find a decent paying job, especially if you had some education in technology and manufacturing. Even people like me who went to vocational school their junior and senior years of high school could get a good job. We have lost quite a few manufacturing jobs under Bush, mainly due to a slow down in the economy which made manufacturers have to decrease production. I'm hoping we can get it turned around despite Bush. I'd hate to see him take credit for a rebounding economy, but my desire to see people go back to work outweighs that hatred.

an update on Jesco. Since his brush with fame, he's fallen into a deep depression. His wife, who is the love of his life, has to live an hour because of her health problems. She can't live with him because he doesn't have running water & he can't move with her because he would lose Social Security benefits. It was such a sad article - it actually made me cry. Here's one of his quotes:

"I feel like a damn possum," he recently said outside the Boone County trailer, where he lives by himself without running water.

"I want to live like a happy man, not a madman. I'm not Hitler's son or Saddam Hussein's boy. It feels like a big, old coal truck ran over Jesco. There ain't a tear in my body that hasn't been cried all out."

I mean think about it ... his fame was based on people making fun of him & capitalizing on his poverty - not surprising he has ended up in seclusion. He lives only with his Jack Russell, Patches & is afraid to open his door.

I was upset by the way Roseanne treated him. I found him funny just because... well... he's funny. Not because he's poor, but the elvis stuff and the way he talks. I thought he was popular with locals, too.

I'm here in Texas, too, but I don't take offense to the Texas bashing or South bashing stuff. I did at first, then I just realized they were bashing the same policies and politicians I hate and bitch about too.

I think this is like when YOU bitch about your lazy brother or your crazy mother and it's ok, but as soon as your spouse or your roommate or best friend says anything about them, you get pissed off, ya know?

Anyway, I like to separate the PLACE and the beauty of it from the fucked up people and their fucked up policies that have taken over. When I do that, I can love Texas. But if not, I can't.

I just want to say I hate Cornyn and Hutchinson and they can both pucker up and kiss my ass.

I've tried to do that, and it still sucks ass.

The reason is that there are a lot of hardworking democrats in this state, and I'll be goddamned if I'll let someone trash talk what we've put our blood, sweat, and tears into -- for years, if not decades!

Ok I'll post my state... since no other SC DUers have posted it. Yes it is a red state and the home of Lindsay (closet) Graham and Jim (the problem with education is not poor test scores or funding but rather the homosexual and unwed pregnant teachers runnin amok in the halls) DeMint.

But the dems are present and continue to work hard... as evidence showed in the SC House picking up 4 Dem seats.

I'm also in SC. But not a native. And you don't have to ridicule it. We who live here know what a mess it is.

I'm not a native either but have lived here for the past 9 years and see myself living here for more years to come so we just have to keep fighting the good fight.
