Question about "Friends"
Where are the opening and closing scenes filmed? The ones with a fountain (and a sofa?) Looks like a museum courtyard. Anyone? Might want to see it on our visit to NYC...

1. I think
it's the Washington Square arch.
If you head south on Fifth, you run into Washington Square Park, surrounded by NYU. The arch is right there, where Fifth Avenue ends.

Don't expect the fountain to be running at this time of year.

2. According to imdb.com,
The opening credits sequence, in which the stars dance in a fountain was shot in Warner Bros LA lot, at 4am. The water was heated, but the temperature soon plummeted. The sextet were not dancing to "I'll Be There For You" as it had not yet been written; instead they were jiving to funky soul.

3. Warner Bros. lot.
I've actually seen it. I went on the tour and it was pointed out. Also on the Warner lot, is the window to "Central Perk".

4. Thanks. How disappointing
Even the opening sequence of the Mary Tyler Moore show - from the 70s for you youngsters - were filmed on Minneapolis streets even though the show itself, of course, was filmed in CA.

5. Mabus and GOPis evil have the definitive answer.
However, based on my knowledge of NY, it looks like they were trying to replicate the arch in Washington Square Arch. That's the heart of Greenwich Village, where the show is supposed to be set.
