Poll question: What language(s) in addition to English do you speak?
Edited on Sat Dec-25-04 02:38 PM by Mayberry Machiavelli
I guess choose whichever you are most proficient in.

On review there are really not enough slots in this poll available. African dialects missing, Hebrew etc.

I hope you understood that. My parents are actually from India, but I'm a huge language nerd, and I find Celtic languages fascinating.

15. Cool, my best friend studied Gaelic in Ireland last year
I'm not exactly sure what she's going to do with that from a professional standpoint, of course. :)

6. By the way, what Africans speak are languages, not "dialects"
A dialect is simply a subvariety of a language, like American versus British English.

I know you didn't mean anything bad, but traditionally, saying "dialect" instead of "language" was the way colonizers belittled the languages of the colonized: "native dialects" instead of African or Indian languages.

8. I voted Spanish, b/c that's my best foreign language.
Tho' I also speak Irish, Norwegian, Hindi and Bengali. Also reconstructed Proto-Indo-European, which makes me a minority of one and a linguistic throwback of 5000 years or so.

17. 2 years of French
in high school, 2 years of German in college, 30 something years of living in Texas to pick up quite a bit of Spanish, and I also began teaching myself Turkish a few years ago.

I'm pretty rusty in most of them, not concentrating on them the last few years, but I could get in good shape again with a little practice.

of German speakers! It seems really strange that it would be running so close to Spanish (I just sent Spanish over by 1 vote).

29. Spanish because it's my native language
I can read, write, and speak it. I took four years of French but I had a useless French teacher so my French is pathetic. I suspect I know more than I think I do, however. I'm trying to learn Italian right now. I love learning languages.

I wasn't fluent, but I taught myself.

I've forgotten over 90% of it now due to not getting to use it. I used to be able to read Hiragana and Katakana...I can't anymore :(
