wierd present thread...
Our family does the present thing a little too heavily. My mom in particular is always known for buying gifts that have no relation to the recipient's universe.

I recieved "jet lighter" from her yesterday.. i don't smoke, or do drugs, or have any need for a lighter that sounds like a jet engine when you push the button. I opened it and stopped and said "i think this is for eric (my brother who smokes and does pot) Of course, once i said that i realized my mom got it for me and it's not supposed to make any sense..

Anyone else get wierd shit for xmas?

1. I got a two pound milk chocolate bar.
At first, I thought it was a book. I don't know how I'm going to eat two pounds of chocolate before it goes bad; I'll probably either bring it to work or chop it up and freeze it in parts. Oh well, it's the thought that counts, I guess.

2. Well, I got 3 winter scarves from my boyfriend's 3 moms
My first Christmas with my significant other's family, and I received a scarf from his mom and both of his step-moms (his biological dad is remarried, his dad-who-raised-him is remarried). Not a weird gift in itself, but kinda bizarre to get 3 from 3 moms. I guess that's what you get the new female family member when you've only met her a couple times. Maybe next year they'll know me better and be more creative. :eyes:

7. My sister got a scarf from her new BF's mom, that is almost identical to
the scarf she got years ago from her then-BF's mom.

She knows, if next year, she ends up with homemade olive-oil soap, to run like hell.

4. No weird presents this year
Because I don't do presents anymore. But years ago when I was 16, my then stepmother, who was one of those extremely practical people, gave me a bunch of gifts that included - shampoo, conditioner, a box of Tampax (!) and a douche (!!!!). Lots of fun for a teenage girl to open on Christmas morning!

Of course, it was my father's fault too for leaving the gift buying to her - she barely knew me. :silly:

6. Those gifts are inappropriate even if she didn't know you!
Unless you're really poor and can't afford necessary items, those items should never be given as gifts. Even if she didn't know you, she could have made an effort, or better yet, your father could have made the effort to try and find out what you wanted. It only takes one question - "Hey honey, what do you want for Christmas this year?".

5. I got the same cookbook three years in a row from my father.
Then we stopped doing the present thing.

He got me the "America's Best Brand Name" Cookbook for my 17th, 18th and 19th Christmases. The fact that I lived in the dorms, had no access to a real cooking facility, and was living on produce and instant foods from the Asian grocery, the products of my rice cooker, the microwave and what little was edible from the dorms seems to have passed him by, as well as the fact that I was too poor to pay for name branded anything!

Needless to say, it was odd.
