Blues guitarist Son Seals died earlier this week.
I was listening to a blues program on the radio this morning and they mentioned this. I hadn't heard it before that. I saw him play in a club back in the eighties. I just went to get a CD to put on, then when I didn't find one I realized that I only have him on vinyl. No turntable right now, so I guess I'll have to put another blues disc on instead.

CHICAGO, IL. (Alligator Records) - W.C. Handy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated master Chicago bluesman Son Seals, 62, died Monday, December 20 in Chicago, IL. The critically acclaimed, younger generation guitarist, vocalist and songwriter - credited with redefining Chicago blues for a new audience in the 1970s - was known for his intense, razor-sharp guitar work, gruff singing style and his charismatic stage presence. According to "Guitar World," "Seals carves guitar licks like a chain saw through solid oak and sings like a grainy-voiced avenging angel." Seals released 11 albums during his 30-year recording career and toured worldwide.

I can't remember the town or church, but I can find out simply by checking an email I recieved. I believe the city is Chicago Heights, but I'll find out for sure. RIP Son Seals. Too much sadness, too much death.

on edit-I recieved an email the other day detailing services for Son Seals, but it appears to have gone into cyberspace because I can't find it now. There is no mention of it on the Alligator website, even though they are the ones who sent me the mail. Perhaps we should all honor his memory by giving a donation in his name to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or some other Diabetes related organization. Maybe, in his name, a cure can be found for this disease.

4. Bummer
He was one of my favorites from the Chicago school (along with the late Luther Allison). I am reminded of the song "Six Strings Down" writen for Stevie Ray by his brother Jimmy:

Alpine valley
In the middle of the night
Six strings down
On the heaven-bound flight
Got a pick, a strap, guitar on his back
Ain’t gonna cut the angels no slack
Heaven done called
Another blues-stringer back home
See the voodoo chile
Holding out his hand
I’ve been waitin’ on you brother
Welcome to the band
Good blues-stringin’
Heaven-fine singin’
Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Been lis’nin’ to your playin’
Heaven done called
Another blues-stringer back home
Lord they called
Another blues-stringer back home

Albert Collins up there
Muddy an’ Lightnin’ too
Albert King and Freddy
Playin’ the blues
T-Bone Walker, Guitar Slim
Little Son Jackson and
Frankie Lee Sims
Heaven done called
Another blues-stringer back home
Lord they called
Another blues-stringer back home
Lord they called
Another blues-stringer back home
Heaven done called
Another blues-stringer back home
Lord they called
Another blues-stringer back home
Heaven done called
Another blues-stringer back home
They called
Another blues-stringer back home
Back home

A sad loss for blues fans. :-(
