A RE-CREATED goldfields township - with brothel, bowling alley, barbershop and even a friendly ghost - is for sale at least $1.5m.

But potential buyers will need to act soon, as eccentric owner Peter Mitz says he will take it off the market if he finds an elephant to live there with him first.

The entrepreneur and history buff, 66, began work on Porcupine Village with his wife Cristina in the Central Victorian town of Maldon in 1992.

In 12 years the sole inhabitants created the 50-building village for tourists, buying goldfields relics from across the state.

But now he says he's ready to sell unless he finds an elephant prepared to settle down with the rest of his menagerie.
