ACCEPT IT: The Muppets are the greatest artistic creation of our time!

They were quite post-modern before it was cool (i.e. referring to themselves as Muppets, breaking down the "fourth wall" in talking to the audience).

They are the perfect entertainment for both kids and adults, with jokes kids can get and adults get on another level. Such as Big Bird, in the Muppet Movie saying, "I'm on my way to break into public television."

Who can forget the Muppet Movie: that first scene with Kermit sitting in a swamp or Kermit riding a bike. And of course the great songs of the Muppets: "The Rainbow Connection" from the Muppet Movie and "It's Not Easy Being Green."

plus they always cheer me up - NO small task.

Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes did everything that you mention the Muppets doing, but they did it years before Henson came around.

Actually, the headline is an in joke that no one will get but me. Whenever I talk about the Muppets with friends I always say, "the greatest artistic....."

You are correct about the looney tunes, as well.

Funny, huh? As a writer I have taken many literary criticism classes that deal with such things as post modernism and structuralism. Things which the Muppets and other cartoons (such as the one's you mentioned) dealt with on a regular basis.

Of course, academia looks on cartoons with disdain. What good could they possibly be.

I'd have to say that it was probably the Simpsons that ended up breaking down the most barriers for the acceptance of cartoons as being more than children's fare in the U.S. during the last 10 years. Pixar's films have also helped.

The rest of the world seems to have no problems with the art form, just our stuck-up society. Comic books have faced the same struggles too, but they're slowly gaining critical acceptance here thanks to writers like Gaiman and Moore.

Sandman is great "literature."
