Jesus the Vancouver Police can't even not kill people at christmas
TWO VANCOUVER POLICE OFFICERS ARE ON LEAVE FOLLOWING LAST NIGHT'S FATAL SHOOTING ON THE DOWNTOWN EAST SIDE.CONSTABLE SARAH BLOOR SAYS THE OFFICERS HAVE UNDERGONE TRAUMA COUNSELLING AND WILL NOW TAKE SOME TIME OFF.
BLOOR ACKNOWLEDGES BOTH WERE "JUNIOR" OFFICERS BUT SHE SAYS THEY HAD
RECENTLY UNDERGONE 'USE OF FORCE TRAINING' AT THE JUSTICE INSTITUTE.
THE DECEASED, AN UNIDENTIFIED MAN, WAS ARMED WITH A KNIFE AND WAS LUNGING AT THE OFFICERS WHEN HE WAS SHOT SEVERAL TIMES.

1. You don't lunge at cops with a knife, even if they are Canadian cops

2. The thing is he was shot "Several" times
As well the VPD has a history of...well...KILLING people. I know they're just doing their jobs, but they are known to be trigger happy.

That is a TERRIBLE neighbourhood they're working though.

3. if you are shot anywhere but in the head
you don't just typically gracefully fall down dead like in the movies from a single gunshot. There's a lot of yelling, staggering and slinging of blood before you drop.

A cop who is already on adrenaline overdrive from having a knife waved around is probably going to shoot until they stop moving, and there isn't a whole lot of time for two cops to draw straws to see who gets to shoot the attacker.

I'd give 'em a bit more of a break in this case.

6. You will most likely...
but if officers do not have less than lethal options when faced with a person wielding a knife, lethal force is authorized.

I still remember watching one program where the Orange County LT pointed out that if a guy had taken that knife out the week before they deployed the beanie bags, he woudl have been killed, instead of having an arm broken by a beany bag.

17. Well, you're the freakin' journalist

Seriously though, what jumped out at me was that these were two junior officers. Were they the only ones on the scene? What does 'junior' mean? Should they have been partnered with a senior officer, or at least waited until one arrived? Were they put through 'use of force' training because of previous incidents they were involved in?

Not judging them one way or the other, just asking questions like my J-school profs taught me.

5. iirc from FBI statistics, takes an avergate of
five impacts to bring a suspect down....

If they are high on LSD double to triple that number

For the record, even when shot on the head sometimes they still come at you

Oh and speaking of LSD, I still remember the one who was high on it, seven impacts, we loaded on gurney, he managed to bend the railing on that gurney...

8. The DES is a shithole...
...and they have different rules for dealing with the residents down there, than with the rest of the public. Sadly, it's because a majority of those people don't have the resources to defend their rights in Court, but it's also because many are habitual criminals "known to police", and often completely irrational because of drug use.

I'm not defending the cops, but It's the Wild West down there, and it's the last place you'd want to patrol. Sadly, that's why 'JUNIOR' officers are down there; they don't have the seniority to take better beats.

7. There was a time
When cops were expected to attempt alternative methods before killing someone. Maybe they did in this case, I hope they did. It always surprises me when people are so callous about life just because a cop kills someone. It contributes to the culture of violence we live in.

10. That's a thankless job
Being a cop. I wouldn't want it. Split second decisions to make, damned if you do, damned if you don't and your life on the line much of the time.

People always say, "why didn't they shoot him in the leg?" If you've ever target practiced, you will know how difficult it can be to shoot a moving target in such a small area of the body. And when a person is moving, their legs are moving fast. Besides, a shot in the leg will not always bring a person down and if they're armed with a gun, it doesn't stop them from shooting.

I tend to give cops the benefit of the doubt on these cases although I do feel every shooting should be thoroughly investigated.

11. Well, if he did lunge with a knife at the cop
then the cop may have been justified. When you are in a situation like that, instinct takes over. If this guy was flipping out and attacked someone with a knife, then the cop would have been doing his job and doesn't deserve to be crucified.
But a thorough investigation should take place. If the cop used excessive force, then he should be punished appropriately.

12. Surviving edged weapon attack.......video by a cop friend....
who came within inches of losing his life. A person enraged with a knife can close on you rather quickly. 20 Ft is not a comfort zone unless you are prepared to deal with the attacker using deadly force. Its easier to deal with a gun than a knife sometimes. Sad as it sounds its a split second decision, his life or yours.

13. So...They should have let the guy stab them?
They did what they had to do. The lesson here is obvious, do NOT lunge at police officers with a knife. So simple.
