What is it with men and dresses in these days of business casual?

Most of the women at my work place wear pants these days. I can't recall exactly when the switchover from dresses and skirts to pants took place, but it probably was a gradual thing as a result of the women's movement and business casual attire combined.

Anyhoo....a man I've seen a few times has mentioned - several times - how much he likes dresses....do you have any dresses?....he likes dresses. I told him I don't even know if I have any winter dresses; all my dresses are stored in another closet, and I haven't looked at them in years.

I can see where a man would like, say, a flimsy feminine sexy dress. But we're talking work dresses here. Just what IS it with men and dresses? I personally think that if a women has the hips and thighs to look good in pants, that that's pretty alluring. But there seems to be something about dresses that some men find particularly appealing.

Anyone got a clue? (BTW....I BOUGHT a black velvet skirt, which I am wearing to work today. I took the hint. But I think black velvet pants would look better.)

But I love dresses and skirts...nothing frilly or fussy, but simple lines and also Wrap Dresses are good. I hate my knees, so I love below the knee pencil skirts with boots.

Personally, I have never dressed "for" a man. My personal style is very classic and "Jackie O" and though many men seem to find that attractive, that is not my intent when I get dressed in the morning.

Pardon me. I didn't know (I'm from Texas, after all).

It would be a rarity to see a woman in a dress in my line of work. I'm a trucker. I think women look just fine in jeans.

If this man likes dresses so much, suggest he buy one for himself and wear it.

There are no leg razors marketted for men.

And that's a good response. I WILL suggest that he buy a dress, if he hints at it again.

On the other hand, if I want him to wear brighter sweaters and such, I can only expect that if I reciprocate (the skirt I got is very comfortable, actually, if a bit chilly, what with the wind wafting in from underneath).

in the showing of a woman's form. Or they can be. I wasn't thinking in terms of skin, though. Yes, dresses show more skin (if you don't count pantyhose). Men probably don't think about the pantyhose aspect.

Men don't want to see flesh, regardless of what the billboards tell you. They want the suggestion of flesh. It's not about the naked stripper, it's about the stripping.

But, after I read your post, I think you are seeing a surge towards old gender roles. Men want women to be more like "June Cleaver" except when the need to lean on a man. They don't like that...

The leaning part is correctomundo. If you want to see a man disappear, just tell him you need some help around your house this weekend! After all, you can't do all that hard work with a dress on! (Just where ARE my pearls, anyway?)

nothing wrong with it - the same as some women like men who wear more masculine clothes.

There's just something about dresses/skirts that I find particularly attractive, and most othe men I know do, too. Perhaps it's a basic desire for what our society has traditinally considered feminine. The world's tightest pants don't look as attractive as a raggedy old granny dress -- and good God, who do some of you women out on jeans that tight in the first place? Doesn't it affect your circulation?

For the record, I have this buddy who's into feet. He keeps shoe catalogs and women's nail polish under the bathroom sink. Compared to the foot guy, us "dress" guys aren't so bad.

Or do you? If the majority of women at your workplace wear pants, are you sure that it would be smart to wear a dress.
When I had a temp job at a large company, the female scientist, engineer, and high level business professionals wore pants. The secretaries wore dresses. I don't know if it was conscious or not but that seemed to say something.
Unfortunately as women, we are judged by our appearance. How we appear says something? What does wearing a dress say, especially when other women are wearing pants. In my workplace, we all wear uniforms so the question is to wear make up or not. It is just something to consider.

women who still wear dresses (not skirts, mind you...but real, honest to goodness dresses). Still, we women occasionally wear a skirt or dress. So that on our floor (we have several floors in a big highrise), on any given day, there may be, say, one or two women wearing a skirt. Sometimes none. But never more than about two.

So it would be appropriate to wear just about anything, as long as it is suitable for business. There are certain dresses/skirts that would be inappropriate, just as certain pants outfits would be inappropriate.

And I think it's okay to care about appearance and care about being attractive to the opposite sex. I thought that way even when I was married. That's not my top concern, but I have to admit that I do care about it. I certainly don't want men to think I'm unattractive. Biology, I guess. I dress for myself first, then my job, then a final judgment as to how it would appear to the opposite sex. I would not NOT wear an outfit that passed the test for the first two but flunked the third. And I wouldn't wear an outfit that ONLY passed the third test. But my favorites are those that pass all three tests.

So....now I have this black velvet knee-length skirt. Nice skirt. Comfy, too. It passes all three tests, I think.

doing housework or cooking instead... sigh... :o

Now I wear pants more. I don't really know why I switched... I think I just hate pantyhose. :)

I want to wear more dresses, actually. I miss it.
