4. I'd like to go
back and see my dad and his family when he was growing up. He had six siblings and I was always close to my grandparents, so I've always wondered what their family life was like when they were all little. They didn't take too many pictures during the 40's, 50's, and 60's, so there's not much to go on.

5. I'm greedy.
I'd go to November, 1929 and buy NBM (Now IBM), NCR, Ford, and a few other select stocks. Not to worry, I'd carry legal tender of the day or precious metals or gems to accomplish the purchase.

9. so many choices
The first response was a good one.

Also - stop the Lincoln, JFK, MLK & RFK assassinations.

Do something to stop the Russian Revolution & also help the fledgling Republic of China after WWI - defeat Communism at its birth.

no clue what to do about Israel & the Middle East.

On a smaller & more recent scale - tell Carter what to expect from Reagan in the debates...or prepare Dukakis for Black August...; don't let Linda Tripp near Monica...prepare a better response for the Contract with America - we still have not recovered and it has been 12 years.

10. I wouldn't change anything (butterfly effect fear), but I'd do this:
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 12:00 PM by Shakespeare
I'd go back to Vienna, 1824, to be in the audience for this:

"It took Beethoven about twenty years to use or set Schiller's poem to music with his choral fantasy. Beethoven had composed nothing of great importance for many years while working on this masterpiece and growing progressively deaf all the while. Most music historians agree that he was so completely deaf that he could not conduct and was not the conductor at the premier performance in Vienna in May of 1824, but he was seated in the midst of the orchestra keeping time with the music. Unfortunately he was still keeping the beat beyond the conclusion (his back to the audience) with great applause that he could not hear. The alto vocalist, Ungar, helped to turn him to face the audience who were still applauding. Then the audience was visibly shocked by the realization that he was "stone deaf" and had heard nothing and as a result there was an almost literal explosion of admiration mixed with sympathy that erupted."

I want to hear that for the first time it was performed, and I want to see Beethoven's reaction and feel the audience's response to him.

11. Go ahead 50 years, or 100

I'd like to see how my kids and grandkids turn out. Pick up a few political history books at Amazon-Barnes-Noble-Borders and come back to plot how to re-direct the world towards a more democratic and ecologically sound future.

Of course, if I get there and the air is unbreathable, I won't be coming back. Better leave a message with someone, just in case.

I'd go to Dealey and set off a series of M-80's just as the car was turning on to Elm. Nobody would know they weren't gun shots, the Secret Service would jump to action, the car would speed up, and the shooters would be spooked.

I wouldn't be involved in any way, really, wouldn't hurt anyone, and would change history. That would be cool!

27. Stop slavery. With one hour, I could make a lot of trips.
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 01:19 PM by Silverhair
I would go to each slave ship on the high seas heading to Africa to pick up slaves and leave 100 lbs of C-4 set to go right after I left, at the bottom of a cargo hold. After that happened a few times, the others might get the idea.

And at the Consititutional Convention, I would pop out of mid-air in front of everybody, dressed as an angel and say, "This land shall have no slaves, or risk the wrath of the Almighty!" and then pop back to the present.

If I had any time left over, I would do historical research.

28. Attend the Constitutional Convention, and point out that they should
make it even more abundantly clear than they already had that there is a wall of separation between church and state, and that this clause, along with the Bill of Rights, is unchangeable period. Of course, I'd also explain the dangers inherent in the vague wording of the Second Amendment and make sure that is perfectly clear.

31. So much to do, so little time...
Let's see...

Pop a cap in bin Laden before he went turned on us.

Pop a cap in Hitler on that battlefield back in WWI.

Pop a cap in Stalin before he screwed up the Soviet Union.

Pop a cap in Oswald on Nov 21, 1963.

Pull Bush's TANG records out of the trashcan after the scrubbing... and spring 'em all on the national media just before he would have been first elected governor of Texas.

Stop the First Crusades before it begins (oh sure, that sounds easy), preventing a thousand years of animosity between Christian and Muslim.

Stop the Big Dog on the way to meet with Monica, and beg him "Don't do it, Mr. president."

Break bread with Jesus, and maybe get some straight answers to a few questions. Maybe exchange a few jokes, but I doubt He'd get them.

Catch my dad while he was still in his teens... I heard he was a hoot.

Catch my son (14) in his sixties... to see if anything we taught him made any difference.

On another note... the saddest thing I ever did was play around with a calendar program... imagining everyone at different ages, and trying to imagine what they were like (or will be like).

pleasure: well, I take longer than an hour with sex, so it's definitely a play the lotto at $250 million or something dumb like that (then I'd have lots of sex just for being rich).

duty: Invent penicillin hundreds of years sooner than it was discovered. Maybe bring along a few dozen other discoveries.
