My b-i-l was just called up to active duty...Kuwait
My brother-in-law was just called up to active duty in Kuwait. He's been in the Reserves for 20 plus years. We all expected it, but it is still a shock. He will supervise many hundreds of men, most in Iraq.
I know I'm lucky he's in Kuwait. I know his life will be easy compared to the troops in Iraq. I am astounded he has not been called up before this. I know my sister has more support than most but it still worries me. It is different when it's your own family.
He showed us pictures of where he will be. It is so dismal. Desolate. No trees or bushes. The men's quarters have very small rememberances of home. It's basically a vast desert. Every time I looked at a picture I remembered that he probably had one of the best accomadations. The troops in Iraq have abysmal lives.
My b-i-l cannot leave the base except for a few official meetings. He will spend at least the next year there.
Please don't post sympathy. He has it better than most and our family will have more information than most. This war just hit home today and it's more personal to me today.
They were in Bahrain a while back and he called from there. They were so thrilled with all of the care packages. He said "All the American junk food you could ever want!"
For the next batch going out, my daughter (8) drew a sub with a message for him to come home soon.
