Happy New Year, from the Land of the Rising Sun.
It's 43 minutes into the new year, and I'm already more optimistic for this year than I was for last year.

I MOVE BACK TO D.C. IN 134 DAYS

2. Have you paid all your debts from the past year?
Did you eat bean cake? (I think it was)

Happy New Year! Where are you in Japan?

4. Yokosuka
52-55.

Do you like Japan? Is it expensive for you? On base? Off base?

5. On-base.
My wife and I live in the base-housing, which is rather nice. I'm a lowly E-4, but we get by quite well using the commissary for our non-fresh items. Off-base, is where the best fresh stuff is, and its oh so good. Japanese veggies, milk, and breads are alot better than the stuff the military ships in from the west coast and stores in warehouses.

7. Yes fresh fruits
were great. We were forbidden to eat them at the time so they tasted even better. Forbidden Fruit you know.

I went from E-3 to E-5 in Japan. The exchange rate was 360 Yen to the dollar. Food was very cheap as was train travel hotels and so on. Does your wife like Japan?

9. Not too well.
My wife is a city girl, and it is far too rural up here for both our likings.

Apples are especially good up here. I guess apples are to northern Japan as potatoes are to Idaho. Good stuff.

11. "Might they be Orins?"
We get them here once a year, for a very short time, and they are by far the best apples I've ever tasted in my life. They're green, and so incredibly fragrant...

And Happy New Year!

6. Funny you mention that...
I paid off all my credit card debt in December, and for the time being, I'm totally debt-free. Not bad when you're 23, and are facing a tremendous life change. (Seperation from the military, and moving back to the United States for the first time in three years, and this time, married.)

8. My lady friend
told me it was a tradition to pay off your debts at the end of the year. True or not I do not know.

I'm glad you are in Japan and not Iraq. In 134 days, we'll welcome you home to the land of insanity.
