Is DU2 always going to run this bad??

Whenever I click on a thread or try to change forums I get this:
Couldn't connect to the database. Please make sure all the information in dcsetup.php is correct.
And that is after waiting for up to one full minute. Wahhh!!

I trust that they will. In the meantime I'm going crazy between the error messages and the quinta-googol-uplicate posts around here....

We're completely satisfied with the upgrade and we plan to leave it exactly the way it is.

Sorry for the sarcasm. We have ONE programmer, Elad - and he's busting his hump right now to fix this problem. The guy works a regular day job and then he comes home and does nothing but work on DU all night. Today was his day off, and he's been trying to fix our database problem all day.

I know that the database errors are irritating, but if everyone could just be patient, then Elad is far less likely to have a nervous breakdown.

At the moment it looks like we are going to have to upgrade one of our servers before this problem will be fixed.

We really are sorry for the inconvenience. Trust me, this problem is being worked on.

I realize that setting up a new server/program is a bear at times. Its just a bit frustrating for this nuerotic from Boston.
I'm sure that it'll be up and a runnin just great soon.

It feels a little unseemly to be asking for more money while the service we're providing is seriously degraded :)

The situation is not specifically related to money. What's happening is this (as far as I understand it): we were previously running the entire message board on a single server. The old message board was seriously outdated and was not going to hold up much longer under the weight of all the users. So now we are running two servers - a new one and an old one - but the problem is that the old one can't keep up with the new one. That's why you're seeing all the errors.

This problem obviously did not come up during our beta testing phase because not enough people logged on to the new board to cause the errors we're seeing now.

For the past week, Elad has been trying to fix this through various software solutions. But it is becoming apparent that the only way forward may be to upgrade or replace the old server.

That will, of course, cost money, which is why Elad has been doing everything he can to fix the problem without having to upgrade the server. So on the one hand we don't want to be soaking you guys for cash because we feel that we're not providing a 100% quality service right now, but on the other hand the time is going to come when we might need a helping hand to upgrade the server. This is a shame, because the point of this software upgrade was to improve performance at minimal cost.

I think ultimately, when the new board is up to speed, you will see a dramatic improvement in response time and I think we'll be very happy in this software for a long time. The improved search function alone is going to be worth the effort, and as more and more threads are added to the board, this will become more obvious.

But basically, right now, we're banging our heads against the wall along with you guys. It's extremely frustrating, and all we can do is be patient. We don't have the resources of Yahoo or MSN, and therefore these things are going to take a little time.

I guess all we can do for now* is wait and see if Eland can fix the problem, but it does look like a new server will be necessary.

*(Two things we could do is send money for the new server and slow down on posting. I shall send money the moment my checkbook looks less less Shrub's budget.)

Just ask for the money! We all want it to be right.
Do you guys make a little on the shirts and stuff? So it helps to buy that too?

Have a contest. Everybody who sends at least ten bucks gets to submit a name for the server...or maybe a better name than "DU2" for the board. Random winner gets to see their winning suggestion somehwere on the home page forever!

OK, or maybe a t-shirt and a coffee cup anyway.

$10 for DU- it's our duty! It's important! It's easy! DU has become a necessary function of the democratic process!

Then later, maybe you can get one of the writers around here to help you write a book about the "Best Of" DU. We'll all buy it! There's gotta be some great stories.
