Any tree experts out there??? Red Bud tree dying

This photo was from last spring, I think it is a Red Bud tree. I was cutting down a large dead tree behind this one yesterday and noticed severe damage to the redbud tree. The main trunk of the redbud looks dead on the inside and there is definte termite activity in the tree.

I would like to take cuttings from the redbud and plant a few around the property before this one dies on me. I have done some plant "cloning" before, is it the same procedure for a tree?

I really love the vivid color this tree has in the early spring, it really is beautiful.

1. It may be a wild Dogwood rather than a redbud..
Redbuds trees do look dead in winter..watch it in the spring.

3. Termites would've only gone for dead wood
so it must've had problems before the termites got it.

Beautiful tree. Is the whole trunk eaten through by the termites?

5. There might be dead wood in the trunk
I had carpenter ants in an apple tree and only discovered it when I saw all the sawdust under the tree. Poured bug chems into the hole and then filled it with wood filler and the tree lived.

BTW, that sure looks likd a dogwood.

6. The damage is....
Like a big gash 2-3" wide and about 4 foot long running from the base of the tree to where it branches out. I have seen termite damage before and the interior of this gash looks like it has been ravaged by the termites. Can you "clone" a tree? I want to take cuttings for a spring planting if it is possible. Even if the tree will survive, I wouldn't mind a few more along the fenceline.

4. Looks like a redbud to me. Good advice about waiting until the spring.
mature trees can live for a long time with damage to the trunk. It may not last for 10 years, but then again, it just might...

You could probably try taking cuttings, but you could also collect seeds if/when it flowers next year.
