I got engaged.

Today I asked my girlfriend to marry me. I had been thinking about it and planning it for more than a month. I got the ring the end of November. Today we went to the Fire Island Lighthouse. We couldn't go up the lighthouse, but we had fun looking around. We eventually went down to the beach. There was a perfect Long Island sunset. I eventually gained the guts to ask. Thankfully she said yes. There are some sappy details of course. We aren't even close to setting a date, but you are all invited to the ceremony. Happy New Year!

1) Fiancee is misspelled. The correct spelling is FINANCE
2) Each of you have in-laws. You may also have outlaws. In my family, I love my inlaws, as they are totally accepting of everything we do or don't do. They are also wonderful to be with. My family are the outlaws. Don't ask. It is a week-long Dr. Phil special. Trust me.

Good on ya for making it a special moment. When my husband asked me to marry him, I knew what it was (the ring had been sitting in the closet for a month, in the little bag from the jewlers). He handed me a wrapped box, so I had to unwrap it and put it on my own finger. Did I mention he was eating a bowl of cereal at the time?

I moved to OB when I was 9 (from Dix Hills) and lived there til I was 19, going to Babylon H.S. Have some terrific memories! We have lived in TX for many years, Corpus Christi & Houston; had to move because of the work opportunities.

So I didn't know what exactly I was going to do. I had plans that were messed up a few times this week. Finally this worked out. I thought about asking her at the top of the lighthouse. The staircase was closed by the time we got there. We checked out the lighthouse and then walked down to the beach.

The walk from the parking lot was filled with deer and sand dunes. It was really nice. Fire Island is actually a national seashore so it is managed by the same people that manage the GRAND CANYON!!! It's on that level.

So we head down to the beach. There was an amazing sunset that rivaled Santorini. The sun set to the west over the ocean. We were far enough east to not see the city. It was really amazing. My girlfriend by coincidence took pictures of the lighthouse, sunset and us. I wanted to ask, but I was pretty nervous. She was ready to go and I stalled. She drew our initials into the sand. She drew her initials with a heart and then mine. It was sweet. Then I started a little something I thought of. I dropped on a knee. I told her I loved her and then asked. She cried, said yes, hugged me and then asked to see the ring. This was followed by a lot more crying. It was pretty amazing and scary and so many other things.

I think I did a good job with the ring too. Her and her family have been going nuts over it. I got it from www.bluenile.com. I felt safer with them than the brick and mortar stores.
