I need a question answered about the FBI
A few years ago I had a friend of mine commit suicide. He was an active member of the US Navy and a nuclear reactor tech. Now why he committed suicide has always been a mystery to me. He seemed to enjoy his service and was being stationed only an hour away from his family. Also he only had two years left. The story I got was that he was on leave and at home. He told his family he had to go to the base and fill out some paperwork. He was found the next day dead in a hotel room. That is all I know.

Now I know all military personnel have an FBI file and I also know that after one is dead anyone can request said file. My question is does anyone think that their would be information in his file on the suicide or would that info be kept confidential by the police or the military? Also would it be worth getting the file or would it be nothing more in it than "subject died such and such a date?"

1. I don't know, but I doubt it.
I really don't have any answers for you, but I am sure that it would be difficult if not impossible. My uncle committed suicide a few years ago, and my dad had a terrible time trying to get documents etc. For what it's worth, I am very sorry about your friend

2. If I were you
I would check for the incident report from the police dept of the city in which it happened. If his body was found in a hotel room then his suicide happened off-base and the city police would have conducted the investigation because they had jurisdiction.

4. I didn't realize such records would be available to the general
public. It is a thought though to try that angle.

7. Yup, one way or another...
We all go through an FBI clearance to get in. Depending on your clearance requirements, it can be very short (checking the local police for felonies and verifying you graduated high school the way you said you did) or indepth (interviewing your third grade music teacher, your high school swim teammates, your temporary fast food job manager, all TRW records of your immediate family for the past twenty years, and finally, your second cousin twice removed that would come over for holidays every year when you were a kid...)

6. Regarding your friend's suicide
It is not uncommon for people who appear to have it together to be suffering from mental illness. People can be very good at faking their emotions and thoughts. So while it could have appeared that your friend was doing all right, he may have been a mess on the inside. I've heard of many stories where people who were closest to a person who committed or attempted suicide never saw it coming. Didn't even get a hint.

I'm sorry about your friend and I'm sorry I can't help you out with the F.B.I. question.
