Do you feel, not special, but somehow better
than the other 5.9 billion people that live on this planet?

Should you live in a 5 bedroom house when most of the world looks at dirt floors?

Should you be able to easily choose between crab and lobster for supper when most people in the world eat rice (carbos) just to get enough energy to survive?

I'm not a Marxist, but doesn't it bother you, in your happy huge warm home that half the worlds population is going to be cold and hungry this winter? If it doesn't bother you, then you are less than a "compassionate conservative."

1. "Bothered" is a strong word...
I'm "appropriately concerned".

3. I'm just thinking about the cold of winter
and how half the people on the planet have non-adequate heating. I am getting more pissed every week.

2. Actually I do not live in a 5 bd house
nor eat crab and lobster, but I still recognize I'm better off than 4/5 of the world's people. And yes, world hunger bothers the shit out ome.

5. What do we do?
I have my ideas that would, of course, cure the problem, but we live temporarily in a country that still has ideals.

7. Well, that's the $64 question, now isn't it.
There are so many factors involved in world hunger, the head spins.

There have been some quiet inroads made with alleviating poverty. You don't hear quite as much bad news from Bangladesh as you did a generation ago. That's because they've been making steady progress in empowering women through microcredit, lowering the birthrate, and attracting investment. Not having a major political upheaval or a typhoon helps, too.

8. That is the $64 question
I don't know. I read about the rest of the world, and it amazes me that americans can sit and be so nonchalant about it. Do they not know that energy production (oil) will keep sliding, meaning less consumer goods and less gas for their gas guzzling pieces of shit? There's an etc, but what the hell, nobody reads anymore unless it's less than 7 words.

4. Smug moralists bother me
Go someplace else and judge the sinners there.

FreeRepublic.com has plenty of them.

12. Not better or special, but fortunate
I live in a nice country home with around a hundred trees in the lawn, clean well water that's cold in the heat of summer, and a nice peaceful neighborhood (except for the idiot next door) where the township police don't bother any of the locals. Now, what did I do to deserve this? I have no idea. I don't go to any church, don't really even believe in god, and I've even been described as a genuinely evil person when I was younger. It's random and it's meaningless, and I just got lucky. And yes, I do feel for those whose homes have been destroyed by the charge of the PNAC, and the children of this world who will never know a world that isn't filled with despair, pain, and hunger.

Does that make you feel any better?

13. Fortunate is a good word
I feel fortunate to live in a house that is mine, that no one will take away from me, to have enough money to eat healthy food, to have a car that's paid for. I feel fortunate that having the necessities taken care of, I can worry about more abstract notions in life like what is my purpose? what is my true calling in life? what are my passions? And, how can I pursue those rather than just wind up in some factory doing repetitive, soul-crushing work.
