Help me plan my trip to Europe!
Going in March--ticket is free, so I can fly into one city, and out the next.

Flying into Prague--my fifth time there! I plan on moving there in a year (maybe sooner) so I will probably open a checking account, and other odds and ends.

So, should I spend my entire time in eastern europe? I'm thinking maybe Amsterdam also, especially if I push it back to April and can go to the Bloembollenstreek (bulbfields)--19 miles of tulips!

Time--three weeks!

Thanks!

1. I was going to suggest Prague first :)
But I see you've got that taken care of. I'm partial to SW Germany/NE France, but that's because I lived in that area. Amsterdam is really neat to see, all kinds of different experiences there. The Anne Frank house, the canals, the ships, definitely a cool place. Added bonus if you like to smoke.

Have a great trip!

12. The local brew is Spatenbrau.
Edited on Wed Jan-05-05 11:52 AM by trof
Pronounced SsshhhPAH-ten-brow.
Literally Spade Beer.

Visit the Englische Garten (free).
If you have the cash, stay at the Hilton adjoining the garten.
In the hotel pool bathing suits are optional (actually discouraged), but schwimbaden caps (the most ridiculous looking latex bathing cap you've ever seen) are REQUIRED. Zee, ve need to keep de head hair out of de drains, but de pubic hair iz NO problem.
Go figure.

Eat stick-to-your-ribs goulashzoup.
Go to the Hofbrau House. You have to. It's a rule.
You can order lemonade there, but you'll get beer anyway.
Eat a big, spiral sliced radish with your beer.
Buy a radish spiral slicer for your kitchen junk drawer.
You'll never actually use it, but you never know, so you should have one.
Ride the trolleys for free, unless one of the trolley cops happens to ask to see your ticket. Then pay double AND a fine.

If you're there in winter and there's a lot of snow on the ground, and you don't leave the bar until 3 a.m., and all the trolleys have quit running, do NOT walk from downtown out to the Hilton in a pair of cowboy boots.

All of the above helpful hints are based on personal experience.
have fun.
I loved Munich.
You can ruin your trip with the Dachau tour.
I didn't.

7. I was thinking of taking the train to Munich, a few days there, and then
on to Amsterdam. Been to both before, but it's been a while. I really liked Munich, much more than Berlin--I found Munich very charming when I was there.

14. Thanks! I should get there and go to Germany from there on my
way to Amsterdam--not looking at a map, but I think that Plzen is on the German border. Never got to Brno yet either!

20. I did the train from Prague to Munich
and Pilsen IS pretty close to the border. We didn't stop there but just seeing those huge grain silos made me thirsty as heck.

15. May I recommend Berlin?
Relatively inexpensive, world-class culture and entertainment. Especially so, if you have time to book tickets for the Philharmonic and (free) guided tours through the Government Buildings (Reichstag).

Even more so, if you have an interest in nightlife: Berlin has more bars and clubs than any other European city - and that statistic is not per capita.

If you can see only one German city, Berlin is really worth considering.

:hi:

16. Stop off in Belgium, Brugge is great for 2 days
It's pretty touristy, but even so it's still a good place to visit, great if you like walking. They have a great bus system as well. Just steer clear of the restaurants around the main square and you can't go wrong. The beer there is phenomenal! One bar I spend the night at offers something like 300 different beers.

29. An even better idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to get to Greece someday, but that seems a little too far away from my origin point--have to be a different trip.

Ever see the movie Shirley Valentine? Came out in the 80's--it'll make you homesick for Greece!

...I figure if I just go to Stockholm I might feel like I've missed out on a lot if I only stay a few days, and don't see the countryside when it's in bloom.
