1. So is the monolith a metaphor
for unknowable knowledge that encourages questions and discovery, or is it an actual object?

4. Is "about 2 hours" a metaphor for our uncertain yet finite destiny written
in our DNA, or is "about 2 hours" one of those static premature estimates that collapse under the weight of the dynamic quality of unexpected experience, discovery and knowledge?

5. I think
that 2 hours was more of a, "I just started watching, and it's a little over 2 hours long." I noticed that it's after midnight and decided to hit stop and watch it later.

8. I thought the monolith was a big black box
And a metaphor for the unknowable knowledge the Supreme Court kept from the American people in December 2000. Nah...

3. Did you ever read the short story...
that the movie is based on? I remember I had it in an anthology... it was the final story, and the only other story I remember that was in the book was the original story for "The Thing."

6. I thought that it was based on Clarke's book
2001: A Space Odyssey.

10. Based on ACC's short story: The Sentinel
Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 08:03 AM by Richardo
He wrote the book "2001" concurrently with the making of the film - which took about 4 years. (The moon sequences were shot in 1964 - 5 years before Apollo 11.)

I'm a 2001 freak - ask me anything. :D

especially if you're sober. :)

11. I stopped the movie before they found the monolith on the moon
I looked at the clock and realized that if I finished the movie, I'd only get 4 hours of sleep.

The ending has treated me fine in the past--although it has new meaning to me since I had a bad reaction to a prescription sleep aid about a year ago--It's one thing to see that ending on a screen, it's another to see it while walking down the hall to the bathroom.
