Could be because I saw it when I was 5 and couldnt sleep for a week afterwards.

It is true that the kid killed his family in that house. The hauntings part is made up thou.

as it has become family lore for really really stupid people, as in boosh is so stupid that if a portal to hell was discovered in his basement, he would redecorate his bedroom. Not that the movie family redecorated their bedrooms but they did stay in the house ---after a portal to hell was discovered in their basement for gawds sake.
