Brandon Routh has been selected as the next big-screen Superman
The wait is over. It is official: relatively unknown actor Brandon James Routh has been selected to succeed the late Christopher Reeve as the next big-screen Superman for Warner Brothers and director Bryan Singer. Although both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter reveal that no deal has been finalized, Singer himself has apparently confirmed the casting of the 25-year-old, 6'2" Iowan.

(snip)

Singer "mentioned being heavily influenced by the original Donner film, and said he would use them as a reference and vague history in this film. Finally when some yelled out 'Will you make an homage to Chris Reeve?', another person yelled out 'Use the original score!' – to this the crew including Singer, seemed to smile and nod in approval."

Variety reveals that "Singer and his crew are headed to Australia next month to begin production." Superman is slated for a 2006 release.

1. Could ruin his career!
Seriously, if Chris were still alive, it wouldn't be an issue. But since his last few years were so tragic, he has become indelibly etched into a lot of people's minds as the ONLY superman. The comparisons might never end!

7. How do you know?
No one else has ever played him in a movie...Look at the batman movies...They got progressivly worse with each new bat.

8. Calm down, toots!
I ain't speaking for myself. I'm not a big fan--but look at some people wanting even the score to be the same and making it as a homage to Chris. There are some people out there who ain't gonna like the movie no matter what--it COULD (and yes, I used COULD in my original post) be a big hurdle.

2. I was hoping
for the guy who played Webster on Band of Brothers. I have only seen a picture of Routh but he looks the part.

This is the chick they are pegging to play Lois Lane

Kate Bosworth

Also talk of Kevin Spacey playing Lex Luthor

I was a huge fan of the Reeve movies when I was a kid so this is really exciting to me (ditto for the new Batman flick)

11. Agree--the fight scenes were incredible---the story itself...
and the underlying premise--no so much.

Do a lounge thread search too. I know there's been at least 3 or 4 past threads singing the praise for it. There's a minor movie fanbase being formed around "Equilibrium".

Sorry to say, but this was announced at least a month ago. Today's latest Superman news is that they finally announced who's playing Lex and Lois.

(Spacy is Lex.)

(I just checked the original headline. It's from October 20, 2004. It's more than a month old.)
