Bands/Singers that you hated at first but would now die for?
(Dedicated to driver8 for giving me the idea in the Pixies thread)

OK, "die for" is probably a bit of a stretch, but you all know what I'm talking about.

For those long-time DUers, you'll probably be surprised that I originally HATED Sonic Youth and Marilyn Manson. Now I can't go a day without listening to something by them.

Talking Heads also. Sadly, I got into them just in time for them to break up.

I couldn't stand "Smells Like Teen Spirit" at first, but Nirvana came to mean so much more to me over time that I cry just about every time I hear them. (There's an ex-GF's death that comes to play with Nirvana, but I don't want to go into that here and now.)

1. with ya
most bands I really love I didn't "get" at first. But, there was enough there that made me go back and listen again, and again...

I had a Sonic YOuth thing like that, too.

Its gotten so I am skeptical when I like a band on first listen, I know eventually I will find the CD, whatever too damn tedious to ever pick up again.

2. I think it has to do with hearing something so unexpected
that your first reaction is retreat. I've read that information can be defined as the unexpected, so maybe it's information overload? And it takes some time to absorb something totally new?

5. might be it
Your mind overloads, so it shuts down at first, but not before it gets a bit of an earworm.

I've had that happen with movies, too. Saw a foreign film once that I thought was horrid and I walked out, but I couldn't get it out of my head. Took me a decade to find it again and there was a reason I couldn't forget it - it was brilliant.

You have something with that absorption, new thing.

3. I didn't get Thin Lizzy at all
when they were originally popular, which was Jr High for me. It took me another 10 years to be able to appreciate them. Now I can get buy with out them.

Same with Peter Gabriel. I didn't listen to much early Genesis. Slegehammer was the first thing I listened to, then I had to have enverything! :D

4. Springsteen
Hated him in the 80s - overplayed and too "pop" - but that was before I discovered his 70s stuff and of course, his more recent political activism.

6. I saw Barry Manilow when he played the piano for Bette Midler.
At the time, he was getting ready to go off on his own. He sang something unmemorable, and, I thought to myself, "This guy is going nowhere." :eyes:

Boy, was I sure wrong! And, as it turned out, I kinda like some of his music.

Whoda' thunk?

:D

8. Iron Maiden
Superficially, everyone knows where "Maiden" is coming from. However, when you start looking at any of it, there is so much camp value that it is to die for.

18. The Clash
Hard to believe it. I hate the Clash when I first heard them. Then I Sandanista was played in its entirety upon its release. I kicked my own ass for missing out for so long.

Now I own rare Clash vinyl, in addition to all the albums and as many cds as I can find and afford. I have the basics in CDs and then some.

20. Life is probably a one night stand.. thank you Dees for those words.
Life goes on like waves. Sometimes it is too intense it hurts and we wander about being able to hold on our breath till the wave dies down.

Other times we feel ecstatic or inspired. Surfing on the wave, in harmony with the elements.

Same thing with the music.
