And the best pet I've ever had. smart, obedient and her name is Roxy. Her mother was one of my friends pet and when he passed she went to a mutual friend. I was visiting him when this little puppy just came to me and set on my foot. I told him I would like to take her home. My mutual friend passed this memorial weekend in a tragic accident. Roxy is very special. As soon as I figure out how to send a picture I will. Help me if you may.

Edgar (l) and Leo (r)

They were the only kittens in their mom's first litter. They were hand-raised by my niece from birth to three months, after which time we adopted them.

Consequently, they are very affectionate and people-friendly. Almost dog-like. They even like to play fetch!

42. The funny part is, it was completely unposed, too
IIRC it was taken in January, during one of those frigid Minnesota nights, when your best companion is a warm fire or warm bodies cuddling next to you.

Since we keep the house around 60° (I'm a cheap s.o.b.), the guys were huddling together for warmth. Luckily the digicam was handy and I snapped them before they got a chance to act too goofy.

I've never had a cat that came when you called its name-- they usually give me that blank stare. That must have been neat to have a cat like that!

75. Jigga was unusual.
He was a three legged black cat.He had personality. My daughter who was 1 at the time would poke and pull at him and he would just purr.We trained him not to use his claws inside and to come.
Basically alot of beef jerky and time.Cats are trainable. It took about 3 months when he was a kitten to learn not to use his claws in the house.I would give him beef jerky. When he would pull his claws out to grab it I would pat his paw and say .no claws. He also knew if he was outside hes allowed to use his claws.Jigga was just too cool.He turned my husband into a cat lover.

He's had a bit of a haircut.
Regulation Coton hair is very long and straight, but I became lazy when he got mats.

Still he is a terrific dog -- lots of fun. They tend to be great companions, and playful like puppies their entire lives.

What kind of care?I would think they need a lot of attention. Are they ok for a child to own with adult supervision?(my daughter is 12 ).Do they really live to be 75 years old?Thats why I think it would be a good thing to get my daughter one. A lifelong pet.

119. No answer is that simple...hehe. :)
Parrots are an entirely different experience when it comes to pets and it's almost impossible to say, "Parrots are ________," fill in the blank and have it be true.

Yes, they do require a lot of attention, if they are tame.

The best thing would be to have a chat with me. I used to breed African greys and Senegals. Due to my experiences, I've learned that parrots are not the right pets for everyone. In fact, I would go so far as to say that much of the breeding needs to be cut off because a lot of parrots are ending up in adoption agencies. Because of health problems, I will probably have to give up my Senegal parrot, Darla, but lately, I've wondered how it would affect my Amazon, Gabby.

You can PM me. Maybe we can grab a few other DU parrot owners and have a round table. :)

I am amazed at the beauty of your birds.Especially Willow.Several questions. My daughter wants to get a bird.Is this the appropiate choice for a 12 year old?How much care and attention do they need.(my husband is retired I work from home)Is it true some parrots live to 75 years old?
What kind of food? What is the best kind of living space can I provide?
I have a glass greenhouse attached to my home.I can regulate the heat to the greenhouse.Would this be ok as an aviary? What species require more then one. What species do better alone?
What is the basic rule space/species?
Thank you for any info .

135. Birds
Thank you. WE love them! And, they are a handful.

Answers:
Well, the kind of bird depends on your daughter. If she is a shy kid, a more calm bird is good. If she has an outgoing personality, then a few other birds are very cool.

Birds do need much attention, but it is usually not too bad. If you want the birds to do tricks and talk, then you need to spend at least an hour with them a day.

It is true some live as long as 75 years!

There are all kinds of foods to choose from, including some 'human' foods that are very good for them. But there are also some things that can kill them almost instantly, if they eat them! There are some great websites about foods.

As for the greenhouse, that would be a BIG house for them. I would get a cage. But, you could keep him/her in the greenhouse. Most species do well with a partner, but if you have a single bird, it may "attach" itself to one you guys.

The kind I have, the Pionus (Willow), is a gentle bird, but doesn't talk (She may learn up to 10 words, but will never be able to speak them well.) But, she is a jealous bird. She has bonded with my partner. When I try to kiss him and she is near, she will hiss at me or try to bite me (Though her bites don't hurt, unless it is a pinch-bite.)

Check out this site Choosing a bird.

BTW...we LOVE the birds. They have such neat personalities. Feel free to email and I will be MORE than happy to tell you all about them! :)

Our birdies are funny critters. Willow has bonded with my partner and gets VERY jealous when I am with him! She will hiss at me and try to bite me! But, when he is not around, she is very nice to me. Soon as he comes home, I don't exist! :( Illapa is a drama queen. All eyes must be on her or she will screech. She is learning to speak, which I didn't know quakers could do! She has pretty good pronunciation. She also likes to watch TV, and laughs at the Daily Show! Thanks for the compliments...I will let them know!

92. Border Collies are the best dogs!
Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 10:53 AM by SiouxJ
I have two:

Boris & Natasha in their formal wear.

Natasha is the brains of the operation. She's damn near a genius. I'm going to let her do my taxes this year ;-) . She's also a star Frisbee dog; a natural born athlete. Boris is a big sweetie. He would make a great "hospital" dog, visiting sick people and cheering them up.

I had an almost 18 year old BC mix named Rocky before I got these guys. Your Biddy reminds me of The Rock in his later days. That's another great thing about BC's, they live a long time for a dog.

109. It's common knowledge
I've read they have the intellect of a 4 year old child. I believe it! Sometimes I only have to say a word once and Tasha learns it and remembers it the next time she hears it.

Yup, my dogs are lap dogs too and they both weigh about 40 lbs. Tasha is especially clingy. She will climb up and lie on my chest when I'm in bed. When I am not available, she'll snuggle up with her brother.

Well, Boris & Natasha send Biddy return kisses ;-) .

138. SiouxJ -- beautiful dogs!!
Their coats are beautiful -- what do you feed them??

Natasha looks like my Border Collie, Cody. He is 11 years old and still thinks he is a youngster -- he never slows down. However, I think I have the only Border Collie in the world who will not chase a ball or a frisbee. We got him from a rescue when he was five and an older woman (if you can imagine) had him before us. He was well taken care of, but I don't think she ever played fetch with him.

One more quick thing. I took Cody to the dog park one day and as we went through the gate, this man that was sitting there looked at him and said, "Now, that's a dog!" I have to admit -- he is rather handsome.

133. gato, nicey and lord alfred douglas

gato. she's a cream burmese from the spca. you can't look at her without her meowing back.

nicey, he was a stray that would hang out in our window and just purr. hence the name.

lord alfred douglas. two was more than enough cats for me, but i found this guy in the street sick and it took a week of feeding him with an eyedropper to nurse him back to health.

137. Here is Bren and Henny....mother and son.
Here is Bren: Don't let the cute face fool you, inside that bonehead is a mind of an evil genius. He is Henny's son.

Here is Henny: She's a big fatso, solid as a rock and very awkward to pick up and carry in your arms or lap.

My Dad and his dog, Pong. Named because his mother's name was Ping, the chinese word for Peace. A great watchdog when I was a baby.

142. My new kitty Oscar

Four month old rescue from the humane society. After losing my best friend of 19 years Fred T. Feline on December first we adopted this little guy. The first week home he came down with a fairly mild case of distemper. He is doing fine now, growing fast and being extremely energetic.

147. What a beautiful dog. And how lucky you are to have her at 16.
I love collies, since my uncle had such lovable collies, and I grew up knowing them, but they were rough-coat. But I do know a smooth-coat collie, who my friend has as a seeing-eye dog for his daughter, a lovely and remarkable dog.

Here are my guys:

Meneken, my tiny Brussels Griffon:

Sara, my little terrier:

And my rescued cat, Catlin:

148. My little schnauzer Stanzy
My mom would just die if she knew that I posted pics of her like this on the internet, but I think it's cute. Here is Stanzy, taking care of my very sick mother early in the morning while she slept.

154. This is Amy! She believes she's royalty and rules the household. :)
She's a tabby, but her coat is such a deep grey that you can only see her black tabby markings if the light hits her in certain angles.
