I usually like to get full albums at a time, if that helps.

10. Emmylou Harris has the voice of an angel.
Mainstream country is edgy around her because she blew the roof off the joint with this album.

She upped the ante a hundredfold and forced Nashville to play for much higher stakes.

Try out just one cut and see what you think -- "From Boulder to Birmingham."

This ain't your grandpa's country music. This is Emmylou Harris.

13. Fair enough.
But you may fall over in a lyrical swoon when you hear it, so I won't expect an immediate response.

It stopped me in my tracks when I heard it first, and I listen with rapt ears any time it's on.

And at my house, it's on a lot.

20. Here are the lyrics:
From Boulder to Birmingham

I don't want to hear a love song
I got on this airplane just to fly
I know there's life below me
But all that you can show me
Is a prairie in the sky...

And i don't want to hear a sad story
Full of heartbreak and desire
The last time I felt like this
I was in the wilderness
And the canyon was on fire...

O and I stood on the mountain
in the night and watched it burn
I watched it burn
I watched it burn...

CHORUS:

I would rock my soul
in the bosom of Abraham
I would hold my life
in his saving grace
I would walk all the way
From Boulder to Birmingham
If I thought I could see,
if I could see your face

Well you really got me this time
And the hardest part is knowing I'll survive
I've come to listen to the sound
Of the trucks as they roll down
out on 95

--and pretending it's the ocean
coming down to wash me clean
To wash me clean
Baby, do you know what I mean?

CHORUS:

I would rock my soul
in the bosom of Abraham
I would hold my life
in his saving grace
I would walk all the way
From Boulder to Birmingham
If I thought I could see,
if I could see your face.

-----
Emmylou Harris

23. I am not much of a country fan...
but on an episode of "The Sopranos" they played her song, "Heaven Only Knows." I loved it from that moment.

31. Damn -- Good for the Sopranos.
Yes -- that is a good song. I like how Emmylou Harris is kind of unclassifiable and how her voice is so mysterious and unpredictable.

I was vehemently against country and western music until PIECES OF THE SKY was released.

It was my personal Paul-on-the-road-to-Damascus experience.

32. They have never said it, but...
I think Tony Soprano is a country music fan. There have been several scenes when he is in his car alone or in bed with one of his mistresses and country music is playing when there is music in the background.

34. That's wild. I don't have cable so I didn't know about --
-- that, but I've seen the program a handful of times.

Country music would make him even more complex. A great detail.

David Byrne tonight. Mostly his solo stuff, Brazilian and Latin American stuff.

A little of the Pogues, Beatles, Marisa Monte.

Was a tequila influenced night. Enjoy!

35. Sounds like you have Rei Momo
It's the CD with all the songs done in a different Latin style of music. I love that CD.

Marisa Monte is a Brazilian singer. I like her. She does a really good duet with David Byrne on a Tom Jobim song called Aguas de Marco (Waters of March).

Check out her web site.

Also check out David Byrne's record label. He's very cool, does a lot of world music type of stuff.

17. Nope.
It's hard for me to describe what they are. It's, like.... kiiiiinda electronica in the very, very loosest sense of the word, but with great melodies.

You're probably thinking of Franz Ferdinand and that sort of thing.

21. Opeth, "Damnation" (progressive metal)
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 11:13 PM by Donailin
without a doubt, they will go down in history as one of the greatest progressive metal bands to exist. But not till they're dead, I fear. These Swedish musicians break all the rules and go for the composition, structure, drama and melody. Right up there with the greats in my mind, like Floyd, ELP and Zeppelin and the like. No jingles with this group, thier composotions usually run arund 8-10 minutes and are completely focused on building up to a climax that never dissappoints. The singer has a voice like Jeff Buckley when he sings in melody.

You will never hear them played in the states, but in Europe they are huge.

This one song, "Drapery Falls," off the "BlackWater Park" CD is as chilling and melancholy as they come. It should be incorporated into an opera,it goes from perfect structure to perfectly structured eeriness to spiraling madness, and then onto serenity, a MUST hear. Thier ability to change keys is breathtaking. Their ballads like 'Harvest' also off "Black Water park" is just as perfect as they come: sweet acoustic melody that is so simple and yet the miswrite of one note and it would fall apart.

But what I suggest is that you break into Opeth by dl'ing the Damnation CD first. Give the songs "Hope leaves", "In my time of Need" and "Windowpane" and then "Ending Credits" a listen before you delve into their heavier stuff, because you need a conditioned ear to take this band in, they are just that Epic. And as an aside, if there was ever "romantic/lovemaking music" by a progressive artist, the Damnation CD is it. Hands down.

25. Not a Country Fan But...
There are two country songs that I absolutely love and they are; Emmy Lou Harris' "Heaven Only Knows" and Johnny Cash's "When the Man Comes Around." Both of them are great songs and have lots of crossover appeal even if they are a bit twangy.
