What races is it socially acceptable to be racist about?

I would start with the Germans, Scots, Irish, maybe the Mexicans and Afrikaaners, maybe the Japanese. What say you?

What i'm getting at is - what races can people make jokes and derogatory references to without facing social disapproval?

I judge people on a case-by-case basis. Actually, I try not to judge them at all unless they've done something to hurt me. I'm white and am much more critical of many of my fellow whites than I ever would be of other races.

I took a class called US Races and the Justice System in my second year of law school. While I consider myself pretty tolerant and open-minded and cognizant of other races' struggles, I learned things in that class I never knew before. I highly recommend classes of this nature; they really make you see where others are coming from.

Technically speaking those aren't races... but for the sake of argument I'll say that it does seem to be socially acceptable to make scathing jokes and derogatory comments in general about those nationalities, yes. As far as what other nationalities can be insulted or slammed on without much repurcussion, I'd add the English and the French.

Hitler thought they were a race. A very special caucasian race.

I find it very astonishing however that on DU - a political forum - some assume that all of you are "white Americans". Probably all male, too.

I know that I'm a guest here and should tread lightly. But I really am not amused.

When will be able to accept people with out labeling them as a certain race, and why should we want to make fun of any certain racial, ethnic, or sexual background. That is just wrong IMHO.
