I need a job

And frankly I am depressed by the fact that I don't have one.

How many layoffs have there been in the last several years? I know people who have been unemployed for more than one year.

It severely inhibits your chance of getting a good job. I know that this is easier said than done since I have been depressed before about that in the past. You have only been without a job a short time, sometimes these things take a while. Sometimes, it is a month or more before they even contact candidates if you send a resume in response to an ad. Find something with flexible hours so you can go to interviews easily and don't let the fact that you don't have a good job get you down. I don't know how retail is in your area but many places hire a few people extra soon in anticipation of the holidays. Apply everywhere and I'm sure that you'll get something soon in that area.

I moved from CA to IL bout a month ago. Luckily I've got a great girlfriend (who I love VERY much) off of whom I'm currently mooching. I do most of the housework, though, just for the record. :)

when i lived in boca i worked for a temp construction agency, it was ten buck an hour, and easy work.

it was called "jobsite personnel" and it was a decent outfit to work for. can't remember exactly where it was though..

trying to figure out how to pay for insurance past my COBRA.

I make a very good salary, and know damn well that if I lost my job, I would take one or two even very humiliating jobs to pay the bills. I wouldn't sit around waiting for the old job to come back and kiss my forehead?

Yeah. Actually, I'm not waiting for MY job to come back. Also, I took some classes, graduated, and still looking.

My health insurance ended at midnight last night. So that is paramount in my mind right now. I used to live in Miami, where Carlos is, and it's not easy finding jobs there, believe me.

Now with the economy the way it is, well, I feel for anyone out of work right now.

The problem is not he willingness of people to take crappy jobs, but the fact that there are few of those around anymore either.
We have to do something about the jobs flying out of this country.

Quality control officer at a cat-litter company?

I will bet these all pay more than my last career-and minimum requirement for that one was at least one Master's degree.

one field that has not been adversely affected is the legal field. I have 2 friends - one in Florida - that work in the legal profession. One is a paralegal and one is a secretary. Both have said that this economy has been good for their field - they are busier than ever.

You and Carlos both have degrees. Have you done searches - I did for my friend in Florida because she was looking to switch and was too busy at work.

my own personal experience was that I go married, and still took classes and worked not one, but two shitty jobs many years until I got a degree. Once I got the degree, I didn't sit back and say, well, here I am. I am spending every day still learning and striving.

I feel for your predicament, but still say, if you work your ass off doing shit, take some classes, you won't be moaning about not having a job. You'll have two - they may be shitty, but they'll get you by, and if you have enough internal drive, you'll find something better.

I am sorry but it seems you are really looking for a medal here.

I noticed that you have a low post count so you can't "know" them as well as I do because you haven't been interacting with them, reading their posts, exhanging PMs with them, over a long period of time. Neither Carlos nor Liberty Chick are the sort of person who wants to live an unproductive life or to "sit back" and wait to be found.

You speak of your experiences many years ago, perhaps in a better economic climate. But many people are jobless today, in a poor economy.

Please curb your need to make insensitive comments to the unemployed.

I've found another job, now I just have to wait until they're ready for me to start. There are jobs out there, unfortunately the good ones take time to find. I was out of work for a month before I found this one.

You're just going to have to get your resume out there and follow up (following up is the key). You've only been out of work for a short time. You'll eventually find something else, you just may have to be patient until something right comes along. And yes, I know you probably need money right now. You might have to consider downsizing your life like I've done. Sell some things, do without some amenities, etc.. It sucks, but when you're as broke as I am and in as much debt as I am, simplifying can be the only thing between you and bankruptcy.

I was out of work for 2 years. The jobs are GONE. Many were outsourced to India and now those are being outsourced to even cheaper countries. Maybe some day they'll come back.

I was educated - I worked very hard and I was very good at what I did. Even though many IT people - most of those I know - are out of work, being unemployed hurts to your core. Things that you took for granted became big events - like paying the mortgage and buying groceries.

I am about to embark on a new career in sales. Think about what you LIKE to do. For instance, if you like to cook, look for a job in a restaurant. What about gardening? Landscapping helpers around here get 10-12 an hour.

Unemployment depression is the worst. Chin up!!!

looking for "young" people. Hmmmm.... When I went into consulting, I posted my resume as I was ending a contract. I got home and my son was furious - he said he wasn't answering the phone anymore - I have over 50 calls. As I progressed, my rate went up too. Maybe we did it to ourselves? I would have gone to work for a third of what I used to make. Too late! Most of the people I know are starting new careers out of IT.

Like others have said, keep trying--apply for ANYTHING in your area that you think sounds even remotely interesting! I googled "Florida job classfieds" and got these sites (not sure how reputable they are though): Good luck! :-)
