1. OK - a train leaves Chicago going west at 60mph...
...at the same time a train leaves Los Angeles going east at 45mph. What is served for breakfast in the dining car of each train? :D

I took the GRE, um, 13 years ago, and my brain was toast for a while, although I did pretty well. Never did make it to grad. school though. :-(

2. Croissant sandwiches.
My brain is ok, but it was really rough doing homework last night after the test. It's time for a break.

22. You have to write
two essays in place of the logic questions I believe. Correct me if I am wrong.

6. It is a bit stressful
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 02:55 PM by JVS
If you started studying 2 years ago, you had better get some new study materials. They replaced the analytical puzzle-type problems with analytical essays. So now the test consists of one 45 min. essay on your choice of two topics and 1 30 min. critique of an argument. After that is one 30 minute Verbal section, one 45 minute quantitative reasoning (math) section and an experimental (not scored) section in no particular order. Since I got two math section, I guess one of them was the experimental section.

I kind of wish they had left the analytical section in the test. It looked to be difficult and difficult tests are usually easier for me to distinguish myself in.

I also don't like doing essays first.

23. Thanks!
I bought a new study guide last fall right after they changed the format, but thanks for updating me. I agree with you--I dread the essay portion now more than anything...and it is first?? Yuck :-(

7. OK. Try this ....
Hypothesis Testing for Population Proportion

Poll was conducted just before election day for the key senate race in New York between Senator D’Amato and Rep Schumer. The analsyst wants to use the poll results to test the hypothesis that the incumbent, Senator D’Amato will win the election. The winner needs a simple majority of the voters.

What are the hypotheses for this test? (We are concerned here with the proportion for Schumer.)

Ho: pop. proportion is less than or equal to po

or

Ho: pop. proportion is greater than or equal to po

What is po for this test?

:-)

11. Ah the inevitable question!
Quantitative: 800 of 800
Verbal: 690 of 800
As I said upthread analytic has been replaced by essays graded from 1 to 6 points. Those results will take a few weeks.

14. Ok. That's right, there were no essays when I took it.
Looks like you did well though on the Quantitative and Verbal sections.

What degree are you going to work on?

17. I hope to work towards a PhD in Math
I was worried that I'd get less than 800 on Quantitative. That would be quite an embarrassment among my math buddys, although I'm the first to take it this yea and one of my grad student math buddys got a 790Q 380V

12. There is a tent with 5 children...
Condi won't sleep next to Ahnold. Ahnold won't sleep next to Wolfie. Noone will sleep next to Georgie Porgy and Dick. You are their mother. Make their sleeping arrangements in the tent.

Don't you hate those logic questions? I always wished there was a choice for "Tell them you don't give a damn who they don't want to sleep next to and that they're not getting breakfast unless they settle down and go to sleep."

15. Zip tent closed, apply gas liberally, ignite.
That should solve the problem well. At the very least George and Dick cannot be in the tent, because no one will sleep next to them and since I am the mom I get to sleep. Ahnold can sleep on the left side and Condi on the right. Mom takes the middle. AND NO FARTING, YOU DAMN KIDS!

13. typical question from the analytical section....
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 03:07 PM by mike_c
John, George, Marsha, and Paula all go to vist their friend Marcel, who lives three miles from John, six miles from George, was once engaged to Marsha but now lives in another city, where his house is five doors down from Paula, who he has only met briefly during another of his friends' visits. What color socks is Marcel wearing?

on edit: So the analytical section is now longer given? That's cool-- I HATED that section!

that. It bugged the hell out of him that I'd solve them for fun.
