5. I can second that
Delish Knishes. Branch out beyond the potato and try the blueberry cheese.

I maybe the only one but I also love the knishes you can get in the street at many hot-dog carts.

Have one for me because I live in knish-less PNW.

9. good knish substitute
When I get the craving-I mix left over mashed potatoes with some onion fried in butter and an egg. Wrap disks of potato mixture up in some filo dough and bake until brown.

They are really very easy and almost as good.

6. If you are planning to be near Coney Island, Brighton Beach in Brooklyn
Edited on Sun Jan-16-05 05:59 PM by BrklynLiberal
try Mrs. Stahl's for knishes. It is on the corner of Brighton Beach Avenue and Coney Island Avenue, right under the elevated subway tracks.
It is right near where I live. They have potato, kasha, spinach, etc, and some of the sweet, fruit and cheese filled ones as well.
If you are going to be in the area, let me know.
The Aquarium is right there as well.

Here is a write-up about the area.

12. Good, now if I can just find an affordable place to stay.
Looking at International Hostel on Amsterdam St. near Columbia University, Brandon Women's Residence Hall, and the YMCA Vanderbilt in midtown. I want to be near the museums and shopping. My Bremmer family landed at the Battery and spent their first day on American soil in the Bowery.

13. Look into the Chelsea Hotel

It has a long history of catering to an artsy and unusual clientele. I don't know how pricey they are but if I didn't have family in NY I'd think about staying there. Of your three choices that you listed the Y is probably the most Centrally located for what you want.

If you have time you might want to check out the Cloisters. It's one of my favorite places in NY. I wouldn't put it tops on my list if I was a tourist but it's lovely to spend an afternoon there.

For a campy touristy thing to do check out the Circle Line tour around Manhattan. It cruises around the entire island and gives you lots of good history and info about the city. It's a fun way to spend an afternoon.
