BMW owners- question about Inspection Light
Have had an '86 BMW since July. This past weekend an "Inspection" light came up on the dash.

Is this BMW's way of getting me into a dealer for expensinsive maintenance work? Or am I about to drop my engine??

Seems to drive OK, tho it doesn't like these 7º temps we've been having...

1. Disconnect the battery for about 30 seconds.
Reconnect.

Light should be gone.

after 45,000-50,000 miles, and the only way to get it to go off is to have it serviced or disconnect the battery (the engine control module needs to be reset).

How goes the exterminating business?

Love the song, but Burroughs is one of my favourite writers, so that came to mind first...

7. Inspection light comes on when it is time to change the oil
but if your car has a timing belt, it needs to be replaced every 60,000 miles. If it is cracked, or if it breaks, your engine will freeze up. Check to see whn it was changed last. Take it to a german car specialist rather than a dealer...a dealer will gauge you for this.

8. Just changed the oil and had tune-up 2 weeks ago.
1 week later the light came on. Doh! Will check the timing belt, though. That sounds ugly.
