Poll question: Favourite Guns 'n' Roses song?
Hardly bang up to date I know, but still a tremendously important band and still probably my all time favourite.

It's a shame that W. Axl Rose is such a fruitcake. For any fans who haven't heard Slash's Snakepit second album, 'Ain't Life Grand' buy it now, it's the best Guns 'n' Roses album they never made. Absolutely rockin' I can't recommend it enough.

Anyway, what's your favourite?

(Mine is Locomotive from Use Your Illusion 2)

What's your idea of talent?

Have you never heard Slash's solo from November Rain?

You can dislike them all you want, but to say they have no talent, well, that's rubbish.

7. Let me guess.....Prog Rock?
Prog Rock fans always amuse me.

I don't know if you are one, but whenever anyone gripes about "musical talent" they usually end up being Prog Rock fans.

For the record I also love a ton of that type of stuff so I'm not throwing stones. But I'm also a sucker for 3 chord punk and cheesy hair metal or just a damn fine pop song.

14. Well that's good then....I meant no offense....
I just love music of all types. A quick look at my computer hard drive would like give someone a headache. Everything from Yes, King Crimson and ELP to the Dicks and Dead Kennedys, to Maria Callas to Charlie Parker and on and on.

But I always get irked at my friends, especially the ones who demand impeccable technical ability from all of their musical artists.

25. Even as a soloist?
I love a guitarist who can refine the art of rythmic playing and not feel the need to assume that technical proficiency is only exhibited through firebrand fretwork.

But I do admit that I fall into that trap as both a player and a fan.

not a fan of that particular genre, but they do put on a very well-orchestrated live show. Axel is actually a decent frontman, and plays a pretty fair piano. The production is suprisingly first rate.

I don't think you can say that they don't have talent, despite the fact tha I don't really care for their style of music. And they did really define the genre in their time.

3. Sweet Child O'Mine...one of the best songs ever written....
Seriously just a phenomenal rock song, not in the typical power ballad mode of so many similar bands of the time.

Despite the sketchy lyrics, One In A Million is another favorite of mine.

But to paraphrase one of the two Bobs "I celebrate their entire catalog".

but I cannot wait.

I got a few of the Chinese Democracy tracks bootlegged off Kaaza and I was very disappointed.

You'll hear a lot of GNR in Ain't Life Grand. It just kicks your ass all the way through. Very reminiscent of Appetite.

And they did have talent. But again that's just my humble opinion so take it for what it's worth.

13. I'm a self-confessed music snob, but I have to admit,
I like 'Don't Cry'. That was a pretty good song. Too bad Axl Rose was such a lousy singer. He sounded like a bobcat being strangled with barbed wire. As for the band itself, they should have called themselves 'Appetite for Self-Destruction'.

37. I like Don't Cry and November Rain because...
...they somehow manage to cram EVERY SINGLE rock video cliche into the vids for those songs:

funeral

supermodels

doppelganger

exploding muscle car

plaintive guitar solo on a wind-swept clifftop

desert

catfight

did I miss any? They sure didn't.

42. Their "Civil War" is absolutely smoking:
Look at your young men fighting
Look at your women crying
Look at your young men dying
The way they've always done before

Look at the hate we're breeding
Look at the fear we're feeding
Look at the lives we're leading
The way we've always done before

My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands time can't deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our civil wars

D'you wear a black armband
When they shot the man
Who said "Peace could last forever"
And in my first memories
They shot Kennedy
I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall of D. C. to remind us all
That you can't trust freedom
When it's not in your hands
When everybody's fightin'
For their promised land

And
I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war

Look at the shoes your filling
Look at the blood we're spilling
Look at the world we're killing
The way we've always done before
Look in the doubt we've wallowed
Look at the leaders we've followed
Look at the lies we've swallowed
And I don't want to hear no more

My hands are tied
For all I've seen has changed my mind
But still the wars go on as the years go by
With no love of God or human rights
'Cause all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars

"WE PRACTICE SELECTIVE ANNIHILATION OF MAYORS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS
FOR EXAMPLE TO CREATE A VACUUM
THEN WE FILL THAT VACUUM
AS POPULAR WAR ADVANCES
PEACE IS CLOSER"

I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh
And I don't need your civil war
I don't need your civil war
I don't need your civil war
Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war
I don't need one more war

I don't need one more war
Whaz so civil 'bout war anyway

45. Welcome to the Jungle
A GREAT song! I LOVE that song! 'Appetite...' is a great album; I still play it. I loved that band and the genre of music its popularity ushered in. You could say Axl's voice is an acquired taste, and nobody is neutral on it--people either love it or hate it. As if you couldn't guess, I love it. It's too bad the guy's such a mental case; then the band might have done some more great music, instead of imploding.

I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not seeing them live. Before they hit it big, I heard the song once, liked what I heard, and got myself on the guest list for a show they were playing at a club. That night, I was working late and exhausted so I blew off the show! Man, have I regretted that decision!

I'll have to check out the Slash's Snakepit album, although I will say that I wasn't big on their first album. Earlier in the year, I remember reading that Slash had gotten together all the guys from G'N'R, minus Axl, and were auditioning singers to put a new band together. But I haven't heard anything more about it.
